    Hey guys first post here.
My major question is to ask IS it possible to run the nokia N80 on cingular's
3G network. It does'nt make sence that Nokia would release this phone with a 3G capability and it not working on cingulars 3G network. Tech support is telling me that it would be to strong to work on there network...for some reason i dont think he knows what he's talking about.
    What do you guys know?
    Thanks
    Dre

Re: N80 able to run on Cingular 3G???

European UMTS is at 2100 MHz. North America does not have UMTS at that frequency. (I'm not sure where Cingular puts its, but Rogers in Canada has its at 850 and 1900 MHz.)

It appears the N80 might just support UMTS 2100, which would make sense if it's not intended for the North American market. It does support quad-band GSM so it would be fine for voice.

This is based on two minutes of googling, so don't consider it the gospel...

Yep, UMTS 2100: Device Details -- Nokia N80

This phone won't support 3G in North America at all, sorry.

We were talking about slider phones in a different thread and noting that slider phones usually never become big sellers. Have you been using this phone long and do you have any specific passions about it?

It is not too strong, it just uses the wrong frequency for 3g. As far as Nokia releasing a phone that does not work on Cingular's 3g network, Nokia is an European manufacturer, and the phone is most likely targeted at the European market, not the U.S. Most of the world outside the U.S. borders use different frequencies for all cell phones than the U.S. does. So the Manufacturers have to make phones for different markets. Plus, as I understand it, buyers in the other markets tend to pay full price rather than rely on the carriers to supply the phones, so the makers can sell a lot of interesting phones that never make it overhere.
