Well, I took the plunge and installed Vista on my laptop a week ago. It was a tremendous amount of time to "upgrade." I'll say this upfront, if I had to do it all over there is Z E R O doubt in my mind that I'd do it again.

The advantages over XP are marginal in my experience. It runs slower than XP and the annoying "approval checks" really get old. The graphics are better.

There are a few other features that are nice too but the negatives far outweigh the positives. There aren't drivers for anything. I can sync my calendar on my PDA anymore or on my V3i. My keyboard controls still do not work properly. None of the function keys on my keyboard work anymore. Sony can't give me any indication when they plan to have new drivers out.

My opinion is to wait until you have no other alternative. Does anyone else have any different opinions?

Re: Jury In or Out on Microsoft Vista?

I'd wait. Vista uses a TOTALLY different structure for a ton of things (including Norton Ghost, so I couldn't restore my drive from an image with Vista installed ). Vista will not have a SP until the 3rd quarter at least, so expect almost no driver support until then (and a limited supply by the SP release/date).

I made the mistake of not backing things up and installing (stupid, I know), and I lost a lot due to vista's incompatibility and the need to reformat due to oh so many issues.

    Ditto.

So when you say you reformatted, you mean that you removed Vista and reinstalled XP?

I'm giving it about another 6 months to a year before I'd trust Vista as a proper OS, wait for a few fixes and the first SP to be released, i have a copy of Ultimate Edition running under VMware on Ubuntu, and its alright most of the time, but it doesnt have a stable feel to it yet. I'm still a great believer in windows 2k w/sp4 for stability in the windows range.

I have to wait for at least 6 months before going Vista route
driver support is the main issue, followed by software

word of advise for everyone never install any Microsoft products including version because the first release always has tons of bugs. they basically send these programs out to test them in the field than soon after release patches etc.. and than finally a second edition.

while most of my friends ran out and upgrade to Vista, i kept my XP and it work beautifully =).

most of them reverted back to XP some bought new laptop w/vista install and haven't had too much trouble yet.

I run three computers (web design business) and all are running XP. I have no plans at all to ever switch to Vista unless forced to since most of my applications are not compatible (including my Dreamweaver MX 2004 and I believe Dreamweaver 8, not to mention my graphics software...). I just bought a brand spanking new Toshiba laptop with the Core 2 Duo processor and 17" screen and it rocks. It is Vista capable so I can upgrade if I ever need to but yikes, how will I afford upgrading all of my software?
Worst part to me is that Microsoft is forcing their vendors (Staples, Future Shop, etc.) to remove all traces of XP from their shelves, hence the clearance sales on PC and laps running XP, so that more people will have no choice but to purchase their nice new computer with only the option of having Vista as the O/S. Hopefully XP will be all good for a long time to come.

Re: Jury In or Out on Microsoft Vista?

Right, so i was a beta tester of Vista, and to be honest i wasnt that impressed at all, i found it choppy, slow, unstable and basically a pain to run, but at the end of the day that was a beta, So i decided to go and get myself the Ultimate Edition of Vista,*ahem* what torrent?, it would be handy to have lying around here, So i installed it and to be honest im somewhat impressed, its alot more stable than the beta, quick to respond, quick to run programs and nice and quick to start up/log in. And i have Dreamweaver 8 running perfect on it btw Acadian, just incase your still wondering if it works!

But there is still some problems, Wireless, i have still to get my wireless working, i just keep getting the xp friendly, Limited or no Connectivity message, but if i reboot into linux it works perfect, so its not hardware. Winamp has died on me a good bit, but id say winamp just cant handle vista yet, i cant hibernate, which is annoying becuase i use this alot on my laptop, if i try to hibernate i just get the BSOD, Apparently my video card isnt good enough to make a dvd anymore! But this could be driver related.

I have still to mess around with it a bit more, But so far im a bit impressed, i might just keep it on the laptop, Still no linux though!

Me, myself am not happy with Vista. I'de recommend waiting for the bugs and everything to be worked out of vista before you switch. And yes, the approval checks are uber annoying!

when ms forces vendors to that it probably contributes to people downloading illegal copies of XP and other software. i mean some people will do it anyways but there are a lot of people who are forced into it because its their life line.
another way ms screw users when they stop making patches for ms software.

you should be alright as long as hackers dont a major flaw in XP to exploit. sometimes i think ms lets some of these security holes go even though they know about it. so they can make it look like they are doing something or working on a better next generation product. Than they come out w/something new and it has similar problems they make patches for it and keep on going like that in a cycle. or maybe im just a krazy conspiracy theories
