First thing I do when I run into computer problems is run the following:
crapcleaner
Spybot
I also run these weekly anyway.
Then for the Heavy hitters:
This is a repost from: MajorGeeks.com - Download Freeware and Shareware Computer Utilities.
Download the following programs and save the setup files to a convenient location:
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot Search & Destroy
ewido security suite (AVG)Search Youtube for AVG Free to full keys
Run the setup files for each program. Launch Ad-Aware SE, it may prompt you to check for updates at this time. If it does then update this and then exit Ad-Aware for now. If it doesn't prompt you to update then when Ad-Aware is open click the "check for updates now" in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
Launch Spybot S&D. Update Spybot with the latest definitions and exit this for now.
Repeat the setup and update process for ewido s.s.
Reboot into safe mode. To enter safe mode- reboot your computer and tap the F8 button at the start up screen. A menu will appear. Select "Safe Mode" from the menu.
Now run a Full System Scan with Spybot and Ad-Aware. Remove all objects found.
Reboot into normal mode and run a complete scan with ewido s.s.
Then run activescan and one other online scan (please be patient as this could take a while):

Save the results from activescan and post them here with a new HJT log when you are finished.http://www.majorgeeks.com/

Re: Virus Recovery
Another good free program to consider is MalwareBytes. Normally I like to stick with free programs, but occasionally you run into the stubborn spyware problem resulting from some Trojan downloader you picked up. I recently tried CounterSpy by Sunbelt Software. Their fully-functioning 15-day trial actually caught & cleaned a bug that my free stuff stuggled with. I'm actually considering paying the $19.95 fee for a one-year subscription.

Re: Antivirus Software
You didn't specify free or paid application, so here's my picks for both:
Paid antivirus: The latest version of Norton, hands down. It's a resource hog, and it's pricey, but it works well on newer hardware. It's also simple. You can also get a fully-functional 90-day trial from several sources. Handy for cleaning up an existing infection, then replace it with one of the better free apps when the trial runs out.
Stay as far away from McAfee as you possibly can. It's utter crap.
Free antivirus: Avast! is the best free AV app I've tested. You'll have to register, but it's free. And it works. AVG is also very good, but slower than Avast!
Another free app you oughtta know about is Malwarebytes anti-malware. It will catch stuff that Norton, Avast!, and AVG all miss, and get rid of it. It's free from malwarebytes (dot) org.

Re: Antivirus Software
Nah, avoid Norton. It's expensive bloatware (a resource hog as already mentioned) that tries to do too much, yet still doesn't catch everything out there. Hint: if you find an anti-virus/malware product that does, please let me know.
I personally like ESET's NOD32 for a commercial product--we successfully use it in a corporate environment.
For freebies, I like Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition.
Big tip: don't do your day-to-day computing using an account with administrative privileges. Particularly, don't surf the web this way. It's a bit like playing roulette. Try working with only limited user privileges and only using an administrative account when you need to make a system change (like installing an application). It can be challenging to run this way under XP because of poorly designed applications. Vista and Windows 7 make it easier.

Re: Antivirus Software
I am using AVG free edition 9.0 on my office PC and Avast free edition on my home PC. i have no trouble using these anti-virus. If you keep updating them with the latest definition from the internet they would be working fine.
