As many of you might already know by now, Google has recently announced and launched Android 4.3 on its smartphone and tablet line-up. The new operating system is supposed to bring in more developer tools and a handful of other improvements. Most of these changes are not UI-related, so you won't notice many differences visually, but the new APIs allow app developers to create richer content, so one way or another, you will gain benefits from Android 4.3.

But if you own a smartphone then you already know that, when it comes down to software updates, Google / Nexus devices are the first to receive them, while the rest of the bunch are usually working on bringing the new software for a rather long time. Once a new update is released, the majority of smartphone manufacturers take their time before they announce anything relating the new OS. After that, the OEMs get to eventually launch the update, but carrier-branded variants are subject to even more delays.

The good news today –particularly for those of you who own one or more Sony gadgets- is that the Japanese manufacturer has announced that it will bring Android 4.3 on a handful of devices. In other words, Sony is now the first Android manufacturer to officially announce the arrival of the new operating system, beating Samsung, HTC, LG and the rest of the contenders to it.

Now, this does not necessarily mean that Sony smartphones / tablets will be the first to actually get the update, but it's nice to have confirmation so early.

The OEM announced that the products which will definitely make the jump to Android 4.3 are the Xperia Z, the Xperia ZL, ZR, the Xperia Tablet Z, the Xperia SP as well as the gargantuan Xperia Z Ultra. More so, Sony has also announced that some gadgets that are currently running on Android 4.1 might actually skip version 4.2 and get Android 4.3 directly. However, some devices will still make it to Android 4.2 in the meantime, such as the Xperia ZR and the Tablet Z, both of which will receive version 4.2 starting with early August.

Unfortunately, Sony hasn't been able to give us any specific release dates or timeframes, but these things usually leak out, so we'll find out some details sooner or later.

Do you happen to own any of the aforementioned Sony gadgets?
