Hi- new to forum and need some help
I have a motorola 720 that I got from Verizon. I recently upgraded to a new telephone. My son doesn't have Verizon service. He recently damaged his cell phone beyond repair and I would like to give him mine. I have read some stuff here about "unlocked" phones etc. He mentioned to me that he didn't think he could use my phone because it would be "locked". Can someone explain to me what this means. It seems ridiculous that a perfectly good phone can't be used by someone else. How do people sell their phones to others? Forgive the ignorance .
Thanks for any help. (I have asked him to email me his provider)

Take it to a local phone shop, ask them to unlock it for you. What is unlocking? When a wireless service provider sells you a phone they make sure that you will not be able to switch easily to another provider. They make the phone useable only on their network by putting a sim card restriction lock on the phone. Unlocking a phone means that the restriction lock is removed so you can use your phone with any providers sim card. So, if you have an AT&T phone you can use it with Cingular, T-Mobile, and any other GSM service that uses a sim card. This is very beneficial if you like the phone you already have and don't want to re-enter all your phone book and other settings. Like I said, take it to a local phone shop that does this unlock service, it typically doesn't cost more than $10.00

To add on to the previous post, your Verizon phone will not work on Cingular's network. Cingular is GSM, and Verizon is CDMA. Even if your Verizon phone was unlocked it would not be compatible with Cingular.
If you want to unlock any phones, try this: http://www.cellphonehacks.com/viewto...t=sx66&start=0

thanks for the response. I guess my son will have to get his own phone; too bad when I have a perfectly good one. I guess I will keep it in reserve in case something happens to mine.
