I would be intereted in hearing opinions on what phone models are considered the most durable and reliable.

I want a phone that someone who participates in outdoor activities that would expose a phone to alot of abuse suck as mountain climbing, backpacking, river rafting, and caving (I know there is no reception in a cave but when I come out it would be nice for it to work still).

    Any suggestions?

    Re: Most Durable Reliable Phone?

I've seen some phones that are not only waterproof, but also float. But these are only available in Japan and Europe that I have seen. Your best bet is a waterproof case, that are avaiable all over the place. If you need shock protection get a hard case. A lanyard isn't a bad idea either.

Nokia 5140 (http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/5140/) is also designed for outdoor activities.

Best bet is to carry a cheap phone in a waterproof case in an inner pocket. If you are speelunking leave it in the car. It wont work in the cave anyway.

For people who climb down caves like you. I think Motorola Tundra is the best one because it has an external antenna for super strong signal and it's extremely durable as well as water resistant. You can get your cell signal where others fail. I know this because I work underground and behind many thick 2 very thick walls and the phone still get its signal. Don't get a phone with internal antenna since the don't always give you best reception for the outdoor. Hope this helps

The Motorola Tundra is a domestic phone that meets military specs for fire, water, rain and drop. You can buy it unlocked on eBay or with a contract via ATT. I have one and I love it. Nothing fancy, just a super tough and reliable phone. I think it's definitely a phone for you too.

I did not realize this discussion was still going after this long. There is a saying that "Imitation Is The Best Form Of Flattery", and you cannot compare rugged cell phones without the name Sonim being brought up. Hands down, the most rugged cell phone around. See for yourself [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX0oDyjc2ak]here[/VIDEO].

    Re: Most Durable Reliable Phone?

The most durable I ever had was a Motorola i700 +

Seriously I have seen them take close to a 20 foot fall onto concrete and remain unhurt. On the downside, they were not a sim card phone, and as far as I know they are out of production, although if you look you can get a refurbished one.

Oh and if you drop them in water they will work after they dry out, but it is the beginning of the end.

I will go for Motorola Defy. The Motorola DEFY MB525 powered by Android 2.1, it has a 3.7" touch display, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, microSDHC card slot and speakerphone. Motorola Defy is dust proof and water resistant, which protects you from life’s little challenges like a sudden rain shower, spilt drink, or dropping your phone in the sand. It also features a large, resilient display that has outstanding protection against scratch damage.
