I recently got my first cell phone and am thrilled. Let's face it, the LCD screen is ineffective outside so I hope that manufacturers are working on OLED technology in which the pixels don't depend on backlighting but glow very brightly. Manufacturers must be secretly doing research into releasing cell phones with the new screens. They won't talk about it. They must know that the LCD screen, the heart of any cellphone, can't be seen in bright sunlight. Which manufacturer will be the first to release such phones and what will the cost be? I would expect the cost to be between $500 and $1000 per unit. The cost will drop as competition and technology improves.

Nobody would pay $500 - $1000 for a phone. The manufacturers are selling phones like crazy as they are. No need to put any extra money or research into that problem.

I strongly disagree that nobody will spend over $500 for a cell phone. Remember when the MotoRazr first came out? It cost over $500, if you could even find one. The D&G gold designer Razr costing almost $500 is sold-out on Motorola's website. When cell phone users see the remarkable new screen, they will run in droves to get the new phone. I believe that manufacturers are secretly working on these OLED screens to refine them to bring the cost down.
