I'm not sure if this is where I should post this, but it seemed like the best place.
Here in about a month my boyfriend will be adding me to his plan on sprint. I am having a hard time deciding between the Razr and the Katana. Both seem to be ok phones, and both do all the things I want them to do lol. I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on these 2 phones are. And which phone everyone thinks is better. Opinions anyone??

    Re: Razr vs katana?

I like my Katana, but my biggest complaint is the ringtones aren't loud enough. Especially the ones you download from Sprint, they're almost like a whisper. Also it doesn't support ANY ringtone formats except for the stupid QCP (purevoice) tones that sounds like a scratchy old AM radio, or MIDI.

I'm not sure about the Razr because I haven't used one, but on the Katana the keypad is completely flat, there is no contour or texture to help you feel your way around the keys (I used to be really good at texting without looking at the keypad, now I have to watch where my fingers are going).

I haven't tried out the Razr but I'm told the ringtones are plenty loud... and I would hope that it supports more than QCP and MIDI. All the ringtones that came with the Katana are pretty stupid... other than that, it's a great phone and gets awesome reception in places where my other Sprint phones would be searching for service (like deep inside large buildings). Let us know what you decide.

Thanks for the input Brad. I heard about the low ringtones. A rep at sprint actually told me not to get ringtones from sprint! haha. He told me to find or make my own (which I can).

Dont go for the razr, Its been crappy since day one back ago when it was $500. Even though its as slim as the katana, razrs corrupt more easier. If you drop it, the software is more likely to corrupt. Its common sence that the speaker will not be loud enough because its too small.

Thanks guys, I think I will go with the Katana. Between this site and a few others, I've heard nothing but bad things about the Razr. I've only heard a few bad things about the Katana, which is the speaker not being loud. But I don't really mind that. Actually my boyfriend has a Katana and he has no problem hearing his phone ring.

I've made a few ringtones for my Katana but QCP is horrible to work with, and to be loud enough on the Katana you have to amplify 300-400% before you convert it from WAV to QCP which increases the distortion. Ultimately, I decided to go with Tone 7, it's a pleasant chime, loud enough but not annoying to people around me. Every phone has its pros and cons, but overall the Katana is a decent phone, and isn't reception the most important feature anyhow?

I know what you mean about the qcp quality. When you amplify it, it just seems to distort. I've been able to make a few decent sounding ones though.
