I'd like to be able to access google chat on my cell without it showing up as media usage on my cell bill. Is there a way to bypass this or can someone give me an alternate solution such as a service that provides this.

No, because the chat is on the web, so it needs to use the Internet Data to access it.
The easiest way is texting.
