Hi, I'm new here and I would like some help in deciding which cellphone I should get (I'll be buying in mid may, possibly june).

First i should probably mention i live in Mexico, so new cellphones don't come as often as in the US or Europe. I'm trying to decide between the current creme of the crop, i've been saving for a while and i want a decent phone which i can use during my intern period in medical school, because i figured i would be using it a lot to consult things im not sure about, or using various calculators.

Also, ive never been bound by a cellphone contract before, so i also have to factor in that i have NO idea how much data i will be using, so im really hesitant if the 1-2gb/month will be enough for heavy web browsing and possibly data downloading (no torrents or anything, just mainly e-books, word documents, images [i use facebook a lot] and maybe a few youtube videos). I have TWO main carrier options, each with 2 cellphones im really considering, so it's really 4 options total.

On one hand, we have Telcel. Mexico's GSM-based telecom behemoth which pretty much has de biggest 3G and cellphone coverage, and probably will be bringing newer cellphones down the line. But right now the options are: LG Optimus 7 (for $415 us) or the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant ($456 us). The plan im aiming for its roughly $60, has an "unlimited data" plan, which is really 2 Gb at 3G speeds, and then however many Gbs you want at absurdly slow speeds.

On the other hand, we have Iusacell. A smaller cellphone carrier which has grown enormously in the last year, invested a lot in bringing newer models to compete with Telcel, but i dont know how they'll hold up down the line. Their plan has only 1 Gb/month, roughly the same price, and you can pay extra for more gbs at 3G speed if you want, but $60 is as high as i will go. Their cellphones are the Droid X ($370 us), and the HTC incredible ($350 ish).

    Both are 18 month contracts.

As you can see, cellphones cost a crapload of money even on a $60/month plan, so its kind of a big deal for me. So i really appreciate your help! and I KNOW it was a long post so thank you for reading!

TL;DR: So the things i need help deciding are 4:

    • Droid X or HTC incredible on a slightly crappier carrier, or Optimus 7 or Samsung Vibrant in the big guy.
    • Telcel or Iusacell? (2 gb vs 1 gb/month data plan and the droid x, which i really like)
    • Android or Windows 7 (which i really like, but im not sure about being an early adopter)
    • Should i consider the iphone? Ive never been a fan cause i like being original. Everybody and their mother have an iphone in Mexico if they want to be "in".

My advise is don't limit yourself with the mobile phone options they have at their table. In my case I own a factory unlocked iPhone 4 which I bought from timtechs because I hate being tied to contracts from any carrier. It's always good to know your options.

Well, ive been looking at unlocked versions, but i really dont like that they dont offer any sort of warranty for most phones. Since ive had bad luck with most of my technology, i figured i will be using it somewhere down the line! And most phones are out of my price range ($450 self imposed limit, don't want to spend too much on one single piece of technology until i can actually afford more without having to save for years! hehe)

Also, i've heard some features offered by the carriers may not be compatible with unlocked phones so i dont want to risk making one big useless purchase online and ending up with a phone that doesn't work properly. But thanks for the opinion!

I would say get an unlocked phone so that you will be flexible. there are a lot of factory unlocked phones out there, amazon, ebay, timtechs would be a great place to look

Makes sense. From my personal experience though I purchased a 1 year warranty with timtechs and I was able to use it before for the Blackberry I bought so no problem with this. About the features from the carrier not being compatible with unlocked phones this I'm not sure as I haven't faced similar issues before but it would be nice if you could clarify this with your provider so you know your options. Cheers!
