Decreasing the Screen's Brightness and Timeout Duration:

  1. Tap the "All Apps" icon located on the home screen
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Under "Device", tap "Battery"
  4. Tap "Brightness" and drag the brightness slider to the left, to a lower level
  5. Tap "OK" > "Screen timeout"
  6. Select a lower timeout duration, such as "15 seconds"

Disabling Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot:

If left operational while not in use, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS can have a big impact on a smartphone's battery life. It's always a good idea to disable these features whenever possible.

  1. From the home screen, tap the "All Apps" icon
  2. Tap "Settings" > "Tethering & Networks"
  3. Tap "Mobile Hotspot"
  4. Clear the check box associated with "Mobile Hotspot"
  5. Press the "Back" button twice to reach the "Settings" menu
  6. Under "Personal", tap "Location access"
  7. Clear the check box next to "GPS satellites"
  8. Return to the home screen and drag the "Status" bar down
  9. Tap the switches associated with "Wi-Fi" and "Bluetooth" in order to disable these features

Changing the Sync Settings for Applications:

  1. While viewing a home screen, tap "All Apps"
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Scroll down to "Personal" and touch "Accounts & sync"
  4. Clear the check box associated with "Auto-sync data"
  5. To adjust the sync settings for applications individually, tap an app and adjust the settings as you see fit

Disabling Background Data:

  1. Tap the "All Apps" icon located on the home screen
  2. Tap "Settings" > "Mobile data"
  3. Press the "Menu" button
  4. Mark the check box next to "Restrict background data"

Minimizing the Use of Third Party Applications:

  1. Tap the "All Apps" icon located on the home screen
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Under "Device", tap "Apps"
  4. Select the app that you wish to change how it functions
  5. Tap "Disable", or alternatively, tap "Uninstall" and remove the app completely

NOTE: some applications and services cannot be disabled

Switching from 4G to 2G Connectivity:

  1. From the home screen, tap "All Apps"
  2. Tap "Settings" > "Tethering & Networks"
  3. Under "Network Settings", tap "Mobile networks"
  4. Mark the check box next to "Use only 2G networks". To switch back to 4G, clear the check box

Updating to the Latest Firmware Available:

NOTE: the steps below will only affect your smartphone's battery life if the manufacturer has launched a new software update that deals with potential battery life issues. Otherwise, if no new firmware is available, following this procedure will have no effect.

  1. From any of the home screens, tap "All Apps"
  2. Go to "Settings"
  3. Tap "About phone" under "System"
  4. Tap "System updates" > "Check now"
  5. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download and apply it
