My first carrier was Verizon back in 2001, in my neighborhood the coverage wasn't all that great. Earlier this year I switched to T-Mobile and I couldn't be anymore happier. The plans are inexpensive and the customer service is great. It really depends on where you live and where you plan on using your phone the most. There's something for everyone out there. Make sure you research it before signing any contracts.

I currently have AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile, Cingular, and Nextel.

Here are my details and explanations:
    From least favorite to best:
    1. AT&T Wireless-Have GSM and TDMA...GSM Service I could not get service anywhere...IT WAS HORRIBLE...TDMA is ok since they have wider coverage for TDMA.
    2. Cingular-Good coverage for GSM...Use mostly while travelling...love the rollover
    3. T-mobile-Very good coverage in North America and great International Roaming...GREAT PHONES!
    4. Nextel-Awesome Coverage...The only thing that I hate is they only use Motorola phones and don't have any camera phones...but may soon (i hope).

    My Phones:
    Motorola V600-ATTWS GSM America-$99/month 1700 minutes
    Nokia 3100-ATTWS GSM America-SHARING $99/month 1700 minutes
    LG L1200 Camera Phone-Cingular GSM-Nation FamilyTalk 3000 Minutes-$149/month
    Nokia 3595-Cingular GSM-SHARING FamilyTalk 3000
    Nokia 6200-Cingular GSM-SHARING FamilyTalk 3000
    Motorola V400-Cingular GSM-SHARING FamilyTalk 3000
Motorola V60-T-Mobile GSM-Get More Supra 5000 Minutes $129/month (V60 phone came with the Handsfree Communication Option in my Mercedes)
Motorola i730-NEXTEL-National Unlimited NDC Plus Unlimited Minutes $199/month
    Nokia 6560-AT&T TDMA-TDMA Local 700 minutes $39/month

Overall, next week, I will be dumping AT&T as my one year contract is not over but I hate them so much I'll pay the termination fee. I may keep TDMA Local but probably not. I'm sticking with the others though.
    Chris
