Well I have been fiddling around on CDMA technologies (we have 3G services here in India). and trust me mates ... there is no comparision to CDMA voice quality. GSM is good cause that was what the world has been using for a long time now.. but the time has come to make a shift..

With EVDO and Streaming video (at 2MBPS, on Nokia 6255 for Reliance Customers... for Streaming LIVE TELEVISION on their mobiles), this technology sure seems to be beating out the compitetion.

    cheers

We just switched to GSM up here in alaska, and service sucked for the first few months, but it is slowly getting better.

Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM technology, while Sprint and Verizon use CDMA technology. How is the call quality between Sprint/Virgin and Verizon? How is the call quality between Verizon and T-Mobile/Cingular? Which carrier do you prefer and think is best?

Also keep in mind that I live in southern California around the Los Angeles area and I travel out of state usually only once a year to areas that aren't extremely rural so the whole analog roaming crap with CDMA phones doesn't really apply to me.

    Thanks.

    stevo,

I work for a telecom company called long distance post. They specialize in prepaid products like what you are looking for! they offer service on GSM, TDMA, and CDMA networks. From my experiences, CDMA is the way to go. activating a phone with us on one of their networks will provide you with excellent service and connection quality. It will be equivalent to that of Verizon. Virgin, which operates on the sprint network is also CDMA, but extremely poor quality, and therefore sprint merged with nextel to try and increase its reputation and such.

I would recommend checking out some of the prepaid options at Long Distance Post. Phones are available cheap on their website or they can reactivate an old one for repaid. From my personal experiences i have found that CDMA receives the best quality in service. Unfortuantely they cannot reactivate your virgin phone, but for around $30 you can get a CDMA phone plus 100 minutes. its a pretty good deal! However, if you want GSM, you need to get a GSM phone. We also have those available on our site starting at $50 for 50 minutes. Good luck with your purchase decision. you can access all of this info our website at http://www.LDPOST.com/Prepaid-Mobile...nes_LDPOST.htm

If you have any questions feel free to call, live chat, or e-mail LDPOST, we have excellent customer service ready to answer your calls. No waiting on hold for hours and no difficulty reaching a live person!

While this thread is much too old to help Steveo much I thought I'd post my impressions for those who might be interested. I've been using GSM in central Florida with both Cingular and AT&T (now part of Cingular) for over 5 years. Lately service in the Cingular GSM network here seems to be getting worse rather than better. I, my daughter, and a friend I talked to today have all seen a noticable increase in "Circuits are busy" messages.

A few days ago I switched to Verizon and their new Motorola RAZR V3c CDMA phone. Before switching I did a lot of Internet research on GSM vs. CDMA. Yes, as PILMAN pointed out, CDMA, not GSM, is the newer technology. Authors of several of the articles I found, such as this one, gave the nod to CDMA as the dominant technology in the future of mobile communications due to the way CDMA handles bandwidth. That may or may not be the case. However, data transmission over my cell phone is very important to me, and CDMA 3G technology has a clear edge here (e.g., see this article).

In the few days I've used the RAZR V3c I've had no problems with "network unavailable" messages. Voice quality, both on my end and (from what others tell me) on the other end, is great, at least on a par with what I was getting with Cingular and Sony-Ericcson T616/T636 phones if not better. This may be due in large part to the great (IMHO) RAZR V3c. Data transmission rates have been fantastic. So far I'm quite happy with my switch from GSM to Verizon's CDMA network.

CDMA is not older than GSM. You have to remember Europe never had the infrastructure for landlines like america and hence MUCH more people use cells there. CDMA is a much newer technology and was built from the ground up to work with data, it has a higher capacity. GSM was built mainly for voice. GSM is pretty much TDMA but a world standard for europe, and a large portion of asia. CDMA is moreso for south korea, japan, and north america. W-CDMA is not the same as CDMA, it's actually a better version of GSM. Nextel is NOT GSM despite using a sim card OR CDMA. They used the iDEN technology. It's actually quite funny because there are so many people that are not tech savvy many still think cell phones are analog or use satellites.
Hey Pilman, you're a doorknob! CDMA is ancient compared to GSM. CDMA was devised by the military during World War 2. Also, if any of these fools try to tell you that TDMA is better than GSM or vice versa, then please let them know they don't know what they are talking about because TDMA and GSM are one in the same. I tend to like CDMA in the USA but there is nothing wrong with GSM, just that CDMA has served me well in all the markets that I have lived in.

Nags, don't make yourself look like a jerk. It's not very hard to convey your opinion to others without insulting them. If you had taken a minute to check our FAQ you'd know that flaming is against our rules and whatever opinion you want to share in this forum should be given with mutual respect to other members, or don't reply at all.

Did anybody posting here read the wikipedia articles on GSM, CDMA, TDMA, or don't forget iDEN.

See how easy it is to post a few informative links for people instead of calling them doorknobs and fools? Stop bickering and just tell people to go read up on it some more.

(Psssst, not to mention you just replied to a 13-month old post in a 2yr old thread. Dead topics dragged up every once in a while by n00bs. )

I would have preferred to send you a PM but you disabled them when you signed up. I guess that means you won't get any more warnings after this one...

Re: CDMA vs. GSM call quality

I don't understand why the GSM vs CDMA thing always gets so personal. It's like people think that they have something to gain by saying one is better than the other.

In all honesty, neither is really better than the other. They both have their pros and cons. It all depends on what area of the country you live in. In southern California, you're not going to run into trouble with either. If you're in the northwest, you'd better be on CDMA (exclude Sprint) or you're going to be in trouble. Verizon isn't even in Oklahoma, and GSM works much better there. It seems silly to me why people think that they need to "win" this argument. It all depends on location.

    I agree totally with Spum.

BTW...For the record CDMA is an older technology than GSM...Not that it matters.

Re: CDMA vs. GSM call quality

    GSM was implemented in 1990.

    History of GSM

    CDMA was implemented in 1993.

CCF : History & Milestones of CDMA

And actually, if you want to get specific, GSM started to be developed in 1982. CDMA started to be developed in 1988. That's in those links as well.

CDMA was introduced by the military during WW2 and once made public Quallcomm patented it and exploited it's commercial uses into what we have today.

Re: CDMA vs. GSM call quality

spum is correct, different networks work differently in every area. It all depends what you use your phone for, and where you live.

As for the CDMA / GSM time line, EV-DO, which is a CDMA technology, is newer than GSM's EDGE, and EV-DO is faster.
