    Re: newbie

Hi bobby, welcome to our forums! I think you've found a great place to get the info you're looking for! First of all, do you travel much or mostly stay in one place? Are you rural or urban, do you know which carriers are predominant in your area, or would you like to give me a zip code to look up that info for you? If this thread turns into a search for the perfect cell phone & service, I might move it to the appropriate forum later... but let's just start with a big hello and welcome! I'll check back later for your replies to my questions.

Re: Recommend a Provider and phone in Las Vegas?

I've been googling around and I'm seeing a lot of people say Cingular's coverage there is weak, causing Cingular users in Las Vegas to roam on T-Mobile all the time. I am also seeing that T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon are all said to have excellent coverage. If you're a cellular "newbie" I should point out that T-Mobile and Cingular can roam on each others' networks because they use the same technology, called GSM. Verizon and Sprint on the other hand use CDMA technology, so one of them could not roam on a GSM network or vice versa but may roam on each others' CDMA networks.

If you generally stay around Vegas and don't plan on making any trips into the desert or other towns, I'd say any of the three mentioned would be fine. (CDMA towers can carry a signal a little further than GSM which would benefit those who go into the "fringe areas" like the desert). Now, everyone has their own opinion of who is the "best" and it doesn't always boil down to coverage.

I personally think Sprint is great for family plans price-wise (but admit I haven't price-shopped the others lately) and I could go on and on about the 6pm unlimited nights & weekends option (it's $10 extra but saves me a ton of minutes every month over their usual 7pm), free roaming, free long distance, free mobile-to-mobile but the truth is you can find comparable features in those other guys' plans and I have to sadly concede Sprint's customer service is leaving something to be desired (I call Business Care for help and get much better service that I have in the past dialing *2, which is why I always recommend the same to other existing Sprint users).

I have a terrible habit of turning posts into "mini-novels" and even had someone ask me once for a "Cliff's Notes" version, so let me just summarize what could turn into 5 more paragraphs. Everyone I've asked says T-Mobile's customer service is excellent, Verizon's is "pretty good" and Sprint's could use a little help. If we are to assume their coverage is all very comparable in your market area, and assume also that the quality of customer service is an important factor in your decision, then it seems to all come down to "prices and perks".

I would almost recommend T-Mobile to you based on the fact everyone I know who uses them loves them, and you'll notice their plans have "the most whenever minutes" to make up for the fact their nights/weekends don't start until 9pm. So, again this will have to be determined by you based on what time of day you plan to do the most calling. If I suddenly went from 6pm to 9pm nights, I'd need twice as many daytime minutes as I currently pay for.

I hope this post is helpful to you, the decision to choose a new service provider is a complicated one and can be confusing. Keep checking into it and don't just take my word for it. After you've decided on a carrier, choosing a phone can be just as complicated. Did you know cell phones can have everything from FM radios to video cameras? A lot of first-time buyers start wishing they had researched the features more before taking a plain and simple phone. You can access the internet on many phones and install some interesting applications like GPS software, games, all kinds of things.

(Holy cow how long have I been replying to your post! Here are some links to compare the pricing of family plans, good luck!)

T-Mobile rate plans for multiple lines of service

SPRINT PCS - (look to the middle of the page)

    Verizon - Enter Your Location
