streaming video phones will be out this summer...
    with mp4 support..
No new towers are necessary for certain providers..

the sanyo 5500 takes 15 second clips (like a digital camera) that you can send to other 5500 phones or email addresses.

btw DarkMIDI...Sprint's network is NOT 2.5G... it is 3G

I'm wondering if ferni was asking about the ability to actually make live video calls...
i.e I call you and you can see a live video of me while I am talking to you...

We have this service here in Australia already (and some other countries have it also, UK, Italy....)
I have a video phone and when my friend was buying one the other day I asked the service provider (3 - owned by Hutchison)why they don't have it in the US yet...

Apparently US has a different cell phone network to the rest of the world and it would involve an entire network upgrade to bring the US in line with this technology... I'm sure it won't be far away tho .... considering there are so many consumers

... and it is a lot of fun making video calls to your friends/family

Don't they just use regular GSM/GPRS in Australia and other countries like that? T-Mobile has a Nokia video phone available, but like the previous people said, its just 15 second clips.

We have a third generation network which enables us to make live video calls if we are inside the network zones...

LG VX8000 is coming out 4Q 2004, and it might be able to make video calls, but not until 2005.

I can see a use for video phones. A person could watch their kid hit a home run while at work. Or you could use it to catch someone robbing your car. Or maybe a concert you could'nt make it to. I'm sure that video phones will become popular. Just like camera phones. However; I'm sure their will be controversy over privacy and other issues. If every one had video phones there would be alot of unauthorized filming.
Cellphone shmellphone, I use a rotary phone connected to a transister radio with duct tape and a hanger for an antenna.

3G for GSM is EDGE, right? I believe we have EDGE technology here in Los Angeles now.

Well in Japan there 2 Majior Service Providers are NTT DoCoMo and J-Phone (Now changed to Vodafone). They are both using 3G networks. EDGE isnt 3G it is just a little faster then what we currently have. We are currently using 2G if I am not mistaken. We would have to have a majior network upgrade and a majior phone upgrades as well. Japan uses a network called W-CDMA it is just a faster more efficent upgrade of CDMA. They dont and will never ise GSM. They incorperated using a 'Sim' into there more recent handsets. Called a UIM or USIM. I USIM or UIM contains all the network information just like the SIM. (The USIM or UIM is only in recent models.) They are way ahead of us.

But on the topic. I only know that they were trying to test 3G networks in LA during the first quarter. But I am not sure. But I travel to Japan alot and what you can do with there new phones are crazy.
I own a Foma p2102v and I love video confrensing.

Depending on what you define as a "video phone", Sprint has at least 4 phones capable of viewing streaming video , the Sanyo MM7400, MM5600 and Samsung MM A700 and IP A790.

If you just count phones capable of capturing video clips with an onboard video camera, you'd have to add a few more to the list.

Most major carriers in US actually do have 3G networks, and have had for quite a while, but have not agreed to support some features such as video calling although the capability is there.

Vcast is here baby. i would think that the only true video phones are those that have supporting service for this feature. that would make the VX8000, SCH-A890 and CDM8940 the only truevideo phones out there. i am surprised that the GSM big boysdid not release video service first. after all, GSM in Asia has had thatfeature for a while (i think before Korean CDMA got their video feature).

True. CDMA carriers have led the way into streaming video.

Verizon has 3 phones and VCast.

Sprint has 4 phones and Sprint TV.

    And on the GSM side.................
