A neighbor gave me an LG 5550 that is setup for Alltel service.. I checked with Alltel and they don't show the phone as stolen and said it could be activated thru AllTel.. anyone know if the phone could be unlocked and used with another cellular service? Understandably, Alltel is a bit reluctant to answer that question.

They should not have been reluctant. The answer is unequivocally, flat out no. Here is why: AllTel is a CDMA provider, and, like all CDMA providers (Verizon, Sprint, etc.), they will only activate their own branded phones. You can not just "unlock" a CDMA phone the same way you can a GSM phone, because they don't use SIM cards.

Long story short, if you do not want to use the phone on AllTel's network, give it to someone who does and buy a phone from the service provider of your choice.
