I'm having the same problem with my wife's V3m. I spent all day messing with it & it still is not working.
On the left window click on Motorola CDMA. In the right window scroll down to V323 and select it. Then click Next to continue.

I had luck in the past getting DataPilot (DataPilot Cell Phone Mobile Sync Software & Data Cables) to work. And I'll probably reload that program again because MPT is incompatible with Microsoft Vista.
Rest assured, the problems you are having have nothing to do with anything other than MPT being Voodoo software.

which phone service are you using? if it's verizon, you can download the Vcast music essential kit from their website: V CAST Music Essentials Manager Download
open up windows media player, click on the sync tab. on your phone, go to get tunes and tones > sync music.
this is only for verizon. if it's other carriers, you need to download the latest version of MPT.
