Hi, I'm having trouble hooking up my new V551 to my PDA and laptop for dial-up networking. I traded a Sony Ericsson T616 in since it was broken for it. The SE T616 worked great over bluetooth with both the laptop and the PDA for dialing up to the internet, although it was a little slow. I can't seem to set up my PDA correctly to dial-up. I use Cingular service, and the dial-up properties I used with my T616 were:

    Dial-up #: *99*#
    Login: [email protected]
    password: CINGULAR1

Is this information correct? I am thinking that since the V551 is supposed to have EDGE instead of (or in addition to??) GPRS, that I need to use a different set of properties. My PDA doesn't seem to totally establish a connection with the V551. Anyway, I thought I'd ask. I'm currently using Cingular's MEdia Works package with unlimited wireless internet usage.

    Thanks in advance!

the settings that you have should work. i had a v551 and had it set up with those settings. the settings are not different with edge. if edge is available in your area the network will find it.

however the edge speed is not all its cracked up to be. i recentlt went back to verizon an connect to there network with a v710. the speeds are actually faster than the cingular edge. verizon will have a new bluetooth motorola phone with evdo soon. it will be even faster.

also the cingular unlimited plan you mentioned is only good for internal phone data not for when the phone is used as a modem for pda or laptop. you may be getting charged by the kb.

Yes, you could remove a screw with a hammer, but a screwdriver works better. Why would you not just use a PC card designed for the laptop or the PDA instead of rigging the phone to it for internet capability? That way you don't miss important calls while you are trying to download data.

You should be able to visit vendor sites like usafreewireless or freephonesnow and get a low cost PC card when you activate a data plan. Chances are good that the same card will work easily for both your laptop and PDA, leaving your phone free to be a phone.

    Problem fixed

Okay, so I fixed my problem late Friday night. Many thanks to the two replies. I just had to keep messing with the networking bluetooth connection; the settings were fine with [email protected] and CINGULAR1 with the dialup *99#.

JMCO1 -- I have been using the Cingular Media works and have not been charged by the kilobyte even though it is supposed to only be for internal phone use. I don't know if Cingular is aware of this, but I know others that do the same thing. For as slow as it is, I don't think $20 for unlimited access is a bad deal on both ends--reasonable for me, and I don't think they have any grounds to charge more since it's so slow! If the speed was alot quicker, I could see justification for a higher price.

teleguy -- If you buy one of those things, you definitely have to pay for the expensive data connect service, plus the card itself. If they do make one that is a CF card for both PDA and laptop use, that'd be sweet. My PDA only has an SD slot, so wouldn't help anyway. My brother had the same card with AT&T Wireless and said it had pretty good speed and great coverage considering...
He was touring with a road show, so it worked great for him on the bus. He was working while they drove and made good money doing web design work. I don't need it that badly...just a convenience really for when on the road and the wife is driving, or when in a meeting. The only thing I'm missing is that I don't get notification when I receive new email...I'd have to get an iPaq 6100 series and only TMobile supports them.

Anyhow, thanks both of you for your advice!

No prob at all. Yes many cards do work with both laptop and PDA depending on PDA model, but it must have standard type II slot. Many iPaq models do, mostly lower series # than yours; sorry if yours didnt.

    take good care.
