New to ringtones and stuff > There a FAQ or someone to explain?

I got a Nokia6100 phone and im lookin to put a new ringtone on it.

what im asking basically is


1. My internet connection on the phone isn't workin right now. (Says no GPRS Connection). And my phone didn't come with an adapter to plug into my computer for straight downloading. What alternate methods are there. (Also no tone creater)

2. What is the purpose of midi. Is it just a special type of file compatible for phones? And If I were to download a midi, how would i transfer it to my phone?

Other than an internet connection or direct cable connection, there are other options to download from a computer like infrared (which I believe the 6100 has) or bluetooth. Keep in mind that for either of these, your computer will also need a transmitter/receiver to communicate with the phone.

I don't know a whole lot about the midi format, but I do know that it was NOT created to be compatible with phones. Basically newer phones have the ability to play midis (just like even newer phones that have the ability to play wav files *waiting for mp3 capability!*). Midi's advantage is that you can basically have an entire song in a very small filesize because the song is basically sheet music; that is, the song is made up of notes that play in succession. You can have multiple instruments playing, each playing their own notes. It's very extensive actually. Music makers have used midi for a long time as a means of composing music and getting it on their computer.

If you are going direct cable connection, you need a piece of software that can communicate with it. I've used logomanager in the past for my 3390. If you have an internet connection, all you need to do is to upload the midi file to the internet and type in the url of the file on your phone. The midi will be automatically downloaded and useable as a ringtone.

here's some advise ;
- get GPRS connection to download via internet connection. and if you have GPRS connection you can d/l via receive MMS.
- or use IrdA to connect the phone and send the midi files into your phones.

note :
- 6100 using 4chl midi files, convert the midi files 1st before uploading into your phone.
- Nokia 6600 & 3300 already can use mp3 as the ringtones

Your best (and cheapest) bet is to get a data cable and the software. That way you don't have to pay for every tone you download

thanks for all the posts. I think im gonna try and find a data cable, and look for a trial version of the software the can communicate with my phone and the computer (logomanger?)

btw my internet connection is cable with a router, so the direct connection is sorta out the door computer wise.

Also, depending on your service provider, uploading them might be a cheaper and faster solution to getting ringtones on your phone.

I'm with Tmobile, and my account (and I'm hearing all accounts are getting this now) has free GPRS browsing. A phone with an XHTML browser can browse regular websites, where you can simply type in an URL of a midi file and download it. There is no cost in doing this on Tmobile. However, I'm not sure if the 6100 has this type of browser (might be just wap).

With a data cable, you have to make the investment of a cable (which can be gotten very cheaply on ebay) as well as the software to communicate with it. As for software, I would look into the 3 programs offered on logomanager.co.uk as all of them have specific purposes. Just make sure your phone is supported by the programs.
