Has anyone come across this situation?
Several times throughout yesterday I was getting calls through my Rogers cell account, from an unlisted number that had an automated message asking to accept a prepaid call from some prison.
Later that day, during another call with an unlisted number, in the background someone was yelling "It's Free!".
I found this to be very irritating and it appeared like some kind of a scam, not to mention could potentially be expensive.

Sounds to me like some of the people in prison found a free number for placing long distance phone calls.
Also sounds like they have a phone list. It could be they just randomly dialed a number, but getting a second call from the same place, sounds more like a mailing list of numbers.
I'd do the "Do Not Call List" if I was you. Basically a spam blocker for your telephone number.
I would also report it to your provider and if possible give them the time and date it occured. I would have been nice to have had the number, but, reporting it will help.

Only slightly OT
I got a call at 2:30 am one time.
Me: Hello?
Voice: Is Aaron there?
Me: No.
Voice: There's no Aaron there?
Me: No.
Voice: Then how do you breathe?!
Then riotous laughter on their end.
I actually cracked a smile while turning over and going back to sleep.

LOL!
Id say fair play if someone rang me with one that actually made me laugh!
Then use it on someone else!

I've investigated this one before... it's a scam and it's been going on for quite awhile... had you accepted the call this is the scenario that would've transpired...
...the inmate likely would have spun some b.s. that ended with a plea for you to dial a "special" phone number for the inmate that begins with *72; dialing *72 activates call-forwarding (to those who have this service) and directs all incoming calls to the last part of that special number, 555-2241 for example. Whoever answers there can then accept collect calls and bill the charges back to you the victim. Typically after investigation these charges will be considered to be fraudulent and you won't be responsible for them but... I don't know how often that happens... and well if you did accept the call... I'm not so certain it's 100% a guarantee you'll get your money back as somebody has to pay these things. The only thing you can do is to remove your call waiting or just hang up. DNC won't help you there in that situation...Last edited by G-man; 05-03-2005 at 11:29 PM.
