This is a "How To" make MP3's work as Ring tones on your Rogers phone.

As you know, Rogers (and perhaps other companies) have blocked you from using an MP3 as a ringtone unless you download it from them. But what if you already own an MP3 you've purchased via online? Can you use it? NOPE! Even know you've already paid for it legally, you still can't use it as a ringtone.... UNTIL NOW!!!

The following shows you how to use MP3's as ringtones. If your using a Sony Ericsson phone you'd be using their software you got with your phone. If your using a different phone, use that software. I would however like to say out loud... I DO NOT TAKE ANY CREDIT FOR THIS!!!! I have done a lot of riesearch over the last while to find this information. The example I'm using is by using my Sony Ericsson W580i. I'm pretty darn sure this will work on any Rogers phones. If not, please say something so I may edit it.

    Step 1.

Download and install the Sony Ericsson Digital Rights Management Packager
    Windows : My Account
    Mac: My Account

    Step 2.

Select a mp3 you would like to protect (use as a ringtone).

    Step 3.

    Run DRM Packager
    Start->Programs-> Sony Ericsson-> DRM Packager-> DRM Packager
Go to File, add files and select the mp3 you would like to use.

    Step 4. (Configuration)

Go to Options -> Configuration -> and select combined delivery and also uncheck
“ Place rights in separate folder” and click the little box with the … on it and place where you want them to go (ex. My Documents/My Music folder) click OK
A window will pop up saying “Before proceeding with the combined delivery…. “
Click OK. Use the following info to fill in the blanks.
    Content ID: myCellPhone @ Blah.com
    Enable right = checked
Check Start time checked and date set to (which ever today’s date is)
Check End time checked and date set to (which ever today’s date is but year 2015)
    click OK

Step 5 Creating the dm file(s)

Click on your MP3 file to highlight it
    Click on Create DRM content
Now you can send this file to your device , you will be able to set this mp3 as a ringtone.

Adding new file to your phone

    1. Plug in your W580i or other cell phone. IMPORTANT: Choose Phone Mode
    2. Go to START – ALL PROGRAMS – SONY ERICSSON – SONY ERICSSON PC SUITE.
    3. Then go to your little phone icon by your clock (bottom right corner)
    4. Right click on phone icon and scroll up to File Manager and click on it
    5. MyPhoneExplorer. Will open, click on “Your phone” icon so Memory Stick and Phone Memory folders show.
    6. Minimize that window so it takes up only half your screen. Then pull up the folder you put the “adjusted” MP3 file you wanted to use as a ringtone. Minimize that too to half the screen so you can see that window AND the MyPhoneExplorer window at the same time. High light the .DM file you made out of your MP3 and drag it to the MyPhoneExplorer and put it under the Memory Stick folder and the Phone Memory folder.
    7. IMPORTANT: Do not go into memory stick or phone memory. It will take a bit of time to transfer. Check your phone. It will have a pop up saying you have transferred a music file, click yes to install it into the Music folder.
After that another pop up will come up asking you how to use it. In the list of options, choose "Ring tone" and you are done!

YOUR DONE!! Now enjoy your ringtone!!!

Re: A "How To" use MP3's on Rogers phones

I'm looking for any feedback with this. I've been in contact with a person who has the LG Shine and they said it didn't work. I'm thinking however it should because a Exlorer is an explore, I'm hoping to find more people to test this theory. This works on my Sony Ericsson W580i and 4 others. If you hook the phone up to your computer, go to MY COMPUTER and open it up from there. You'll see your phone and have two listings/folders. One for your Phone memory and one for your Memory card. That's the drop in window you want.

    Feedback please....

Hey dalton i tried this method with no success BUT i figured out what was wrong.

In DRM packager you used combined delivery but that didn't work for me so i gave forward-lock a try and VOILA SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so maybe i'm thinking that some w580i's are different and that's why the combined delivery didn't work.

anyways, you should put both options saying if combined delivery doesn't work for you then try forward lock.

    Hi W580iuser,

Great to hear it worked for you. It's interesting how combined didn't work when it should have but oh well, that's the nature of testing. Thanks for the feedback!!!

With 140 views, I'm hoping to get some more feedback if this works JUST on Sony Ericsson W580i's thru Rogers or does it work on other Rogers phones. If you don't have software for your phone, just hook up your phone via a USB or Bluetooth and open your phone via Explorer.

Re: A "How To" use MP3's on Rogers phones

    Hi Dalton,

This method works on my Sony W580i using myphoneexplorer. I was also able to get ringtones on my samsung a706 by drm'ing my files first and then using the samsung pc studio to transfer them. Other brands (nokia, samsung, lg) will not work with myphoneexplorer. Every time i have another brand, other than sony, connected and try to use myphoneexplorer to connect to the phone the program crashes.

Im wondering if there's a way to drm a mp3 and keep the .mp3 extension instead of .dm. Maybe that will work?

Hello every one, this is my first post here. I would like to confirm, that Sony's locking tool works for Nokia and Samsung as well.

Found great "How To" on you tube to unbrand nokia 5300 on rogers network. Here is the link. It works but follow instructions carefully. Enjoy.

Sorry Muskoka, if you pause video of instructions and save screen image of instructions then download free "NSS" software from b-phreaks.co.uk NSS103812exe is name of program. Worked great on Nokia 5300 on two different phones.
