not showing in the computer devices and drives list

When I plug in my I think it's the first galaxy to put songs or videos on it it doesn't show on the computer list of devices and drives. It used to but then nothing. I got a new usb cable and that worked for a few times but that too has quit showing the phone as one of the devices. Could the problem be in the phone input jack? any other ideas?

Are you sure you have unlocked the lock screen after connecting the phone to the USB cord?
Also, after connecting the phone to the USB and getting past the lock screen, make sure the connection is set to "Media device" / "Media sync" mode in the notification area under USB options.

The thing eventually quit charging as well as not syncing. After trying new usb chords and other advice with no result I stuck a knife point into the charge port and applied a little pressure to the contact tab therein. works fine now.
