Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

    HEEEELP MEEE....

I would like to call upon the obvious genius present in this forum. I got my u420 through Alltel, read the forum, bought a no-name USB cable for the phone, downloaded the CMDA driver, rebooted, downloaded bitpim, tried to connect and........ Bitpim said something like "Found other CMDA phone on COM9." I "rebooted" the phone as per instructions - by "rebooted" I assume you simply mean to turn it off and back on since I didn't find a reboot option on the phone. I tried to use different USB ports on my pc (i'm desperate). I also took a look at the device manager under modems and it said that the SAMSUNG device was working properly. I don't even know if that is pertinent. I don't even know what CMDA means, sadly. PLEASE help. I know you can figure it out.

@stanner: Don't fear! You have done everything right so far! When you see "Found other CMDA phone on COM#" in the BitPim status bar that is good!. This is actually a question I have gotten a few times, so let me try to explain:

You are probably wondering why it uses the name other CDMA phone instead of something simpler like Samsung SCH-U420, right? This certainly does sound misleading. Here's the reasoning: every phone stores its calendar dates, phone book entries, and wallpaper, etc, in a special folder/directory, similar to the way Windows stores programs and drivers in different folders on your hard drive. Simple enough, right? But different models store information in different places, for example, it is probably a safe bet that Samsung phones store most of these files in different folders than an Audiovox phone. Therefore, to determine where these special folders are on your phone, BitPim tries to detect your phone based on the 60 or so phones that its developers have programmed it to recognize. Unfortunately, the U420 has not been programmed in, but this doesn't leave you helpless. However, because of this, you should ignore the PhoneBook, Media, Calendar, etc, options that are found under the Phone menu on the left side menu because BitPim doesn't know how to get this information off your phone.

Even though BitPim doesn't recognize our phone, it will still allow us to access the filesystem of the phone directly. This can be done by going to the View menu and making sure that View Filesystem option has a check mark (you shouldn't need to do this again). After this has been done, you should notice the option of Filesystem on the left side menu. If you click it, you should see a plain looking folder (with a title of just '/') on the right hand side. Click the plus (+) icon next to it and you will see your phone's filesystem.

From here you can -- carefully -- begin to make changes to your phone. For example, if you follow my previous instructions, you can add ringtones or wallpaper to your phone, or extract photos. Modifying the phone's filesystem is much like going into My Computer in Windows, although it can be very useful and allow you to do a number of things, it can also be very dangerous. So please, do so at your own risk.

On a lighter note, however, I do encourage you to have fun, and wish you good luck! Also, please let me know if there is anything else I can help to clarify on this topic!

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

Thank you desheffer!! But when I click the + sign I get a message titled "Failed to open communications - COM9" which says "COM9: Could not open port: (2, 'CreateFile', 'The system could not find the file specified.') Any ideas?

BitPim help says that the phone may be in use by another program or I may not have permission to use it, among other reasons for the error.

Hmmm... maybe everything isn't all right then. It sounds as if it actually isn't detecting your phone at all. Try this: without the phone connected, start up BitPim. Take a look at the status bar in BitPim and you should notice a green circle and a yellow/red circle. Now connect the phone and wait about 5 seconds. What happens to the colors of the circles and what text is displayed in the status bar? Does anything change?

Also, go into the Edit menu and click Settings in BitPim. If nothing else words, you may want to try messing around with the Com Port by clicking Browse.

I'm not really sure what the problem is, but I guess this is a start! Good luck!

Upon startup, green on the left/ "ready"; yellow on the right/"Other CDMA phone on COM9 - manually set". I plugged it in, it flashed red/"Busy." After a few seconds the left is green/"Ready" and the right is Green/"Other CDMA phone on COM5 - Detected"

    @bluetooth users.

Everything is pretty much in the wiki. How this got so overlooked is beyond me, but I am grateful to those that did it. Most dongles will work, and it seem's to be with bluesoleil bluetooth drivers the best. Follow the instructions for either the data cable or bluetooth and it will be ok. Also, personel preferance to pic resizing program is PixResizer. Free, small and ez. Ty all for you input and work

Pic resizing for me was Irfanview, small, free, fast, and can do batch resizing also.

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

Question: How is it that Alltel could take old phone numbers from my old phone and send to my U420 and also give me a disk with all the information (cost $10) when I got my new phone, but I cant do that myself? (Would be nice to do this b/c could edit the info off the phone then send back. Anybody willing to loan their u420 to the guys at Bitpim so they can figure something out for us?

Well USPS said my data cable arrived today, so we'll see if it's there when I get home. Will update on my attempt with the data cable, seeing as bluetooth yeilded little to no results for me.

What about the Themes, anybody got any idea if we can modify or even create our own themes for the phone.
