Im new to this forum and to cell phones in general, so I apologize if my question is one that has been answered countless times.

I recently purchased my first phone, a SGH-t619 that I purchased through T-mobile. This phone has mp3 playing capabilities. The phone allows me to set an mp3 as my ringtone, but this does not seem to work with mp3s I download form the internet or create with my computer. The only mp3 I seem to be able to use as a ring tone is the mp3 that came with the phone. Other mp3s appear on the list for selection as a ringtone, but appear grayed out and cannot be selected.

I read the sticky above about sending mp3s to your phone, but have not attempted it because I do not have free internet access on my cell phone and it is a simple matter to transfer mp3s to and from my pc via bluetooth. Also, I don't think my problem is with the method by which I recieved the mp3.

I am guessing that I can only use mp3s that are recorded a certain way as ringtones (a certain bitrate and/or length perhaps?). Can someone tell me what the requirements are? The song that came with my phone really sucks and I'd love to use a ringtone from one of my CDs.

So, first, if you are on Tmo, they have the phone "crippled" so that it will only allow you to use mp3s purchased from tmoible. In other words, even when you get your mps to the appropriate length, and get them to your phone, they will be greyed out, so that you may not select them to use as a ringtone. Thus, the remedy is to convert your cropped mp3 file to a different format.
For cropping I use MP3cutter and for converting to a 3gp format I used WinXMedia converter. Then bluetooth the new 3gp version from my pc to my phone. No longer greyed out and can be now be selected to be used for a ringtone.

Dunno if anyone needs this but it works. I got this from another forum... no credit to me.

    Step by step:

    1. Select the Scott Stapp song as your ringtone.
    2. Immediately go back into the mp3 list and select the song you want. (When you hit select nothing will happen)
    3. Hit Back. (It will still show the old song as the ringer... ignore that.)
    4. Hit Save.
    5. Enjoy

I've found you can set MP3's as the main ringtone as well as a different ringtone per MyFaves contact using the same method. Haven't figured out how to get it per non-MyFave contacts.

Also, it doesn't matter the length. The first song I did it with was a 8 minute mp3 and it plays the whole thing no problem.
