I have never understood what this feature is for and thus have never used it. Can anybody explain please.

Next time you go into a hospital and it says "turn off your cell phone" (because they interfere with medical equipment) you can switch to airplane mode and play video games without making someone's ekg go berserk. Also handy if you want to keep your airplane from crashing into the ocean, supposedly certain phone technologies can interfere with the navigation controls.
