WARNING! Applying a master reset on your smartphone will result in the deletion of all personal data stored on the internal memory of the phone. This includes all images, apps, custom ringtones, downloaded content and contacts. Master resetting a smartphone will return it to original factory settings.

Master Resetting From the Settings Menu:

  1. While on the home screen, tap the "Applications" icon
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Scroll to "Personal" and tap "Back up & reset"
  4. Clear the check box next to "Automatic restore"
  5. Tap "Factory data reset" under "Personal data"
  6. Tap "Reset phone"
  7. In case your smartphone is protected by a screen lock, enter the password or PIN and tap "Continue"
  8. Tap "Erase everything" to confirm, and wait for your device to reboot

Master Resetting via Hardware Keys:

IMPORTANT: The Xperia M2 can't be reset using hardware buttons, but if your handset is frozen, won't power on or is otherwise preventing you from accessing the settings menu and reset your device, then you can perform the following:

  1. Press and hold the "Power" and "Volume Up" buttons
  2. Keep on holding the buttons for about 10 seconds, until the device vibrates three times
  3. Release the hardware buttons
  4. Press the "Power" key and try turning your smartphone on

NOTE: if you can't access your smartphone due to a forgotten password, you can follow the guide below to reload the smartphone's software:

Reloading the Device Software:

  1. On your computer, visit Download for PC - Sony Smartphones (US)
  2. Download the PC Companion tool and install it on your computer
  3. Launch the PC Companion tool
  4. Click "Start" underneath "Support Zone" (NOTE: it may take a while for the system to load, if this is the first time using "Support Zone"
  5. Click "Start" under "Phone / Tablet Software Update"
  6. Click "Repair my phone / tablet"
  7. Select the Xperia M2 from the list of devise. If missing, click "Another phone / tablet"
  8. Reviewing the on-screen information and click "Next" > "Continue"
  9. Wait for your computer to download the necessary update
  10. Select your model from the list, if necessary
  11. Follow the on-screen steps and connect your smartphone to your computer. IMPORTANT: when connecting the device, make sure it's turned off, and ensure that the "Volume Down" button is pressed
  12. Once the reload process starts, you can release the "Volume Down" button
  13. Wait for the software to be downloaded and installed. NOTE: it may take up to 30 minutes (or more) for the process to complete. The speed varies on your Internet connection and other factors
