Someone has mentioned there will be a phone that will be campatible with both iDEN and CDMA..........I was wondering if that was true?

I, recently, quit my job because my boss was telling everybody that Sprint phones will comunicate with Nextel in August or at the end of the year. Only to find out, 3 weeks later, from a Sprint/Nextel representative that it was not true. It was one of the reasons why I quit working for him because he was disrepuptable. Trying to get people to buy with that line. Hook them in, "Sprint will be compatible with Nextel in August". The rep who deals with Sprint/Nextel himself said, "Sprint/Nextel might be able to be compatible in 2010 when the new (if it was ever perfected) technology, Q-Chat, was ready.

And if they do make a phone that would work on CDMA and iDEN? Would it not be like Cingular's (forgive me I cannot remember the name) phone. The one where everyone who was not "the traveler". And had the phone continued to get dropped calls because the phone kept getting confused as to which tower to bounce off of. Please.....clue me in.

Did I quit my job for nothing?

    Re: A new Sprint/Nextel phone?

I did some checking on this, and look what I found! I'll keep looking and maybe I can find more than this somewhat vague article, I want pictures! This does confirm the rumor, that Sprint has slated the release for October, but the article doesn't list any details. It also hints at some other technology Sprint is working on right now, and how they plan to integrate Sprint and Nextel's PTT...

We have also heard about a CDMA/iDen phone to be released in the 4Q of 2006. Our Sprint Rep had no other details though. I'm almost 100% sure it will be manufactured by Motorola, since they are the only iDen manufacturer & they also release a phone on Sprint's Network earlier this month.

Well, unfortunately, I was told by my Sprint (or x rep) that it was not possible because it was going to be too expensive. That it would take time. For all the Sprint/Nextel phones that will be compatible. Because, Nextel does not have the tower locations (like Sprint) and will have to be built. Needless to say, it is a craps shoot right now.

If this is the phone you are talking about. Oh, the Motorola phone is a smart looking phone. I saw it.......very cool. It was sent as a test product to us and then survey in ten days. No one did it. The owner did not want to. What a waste! We were all wondering what Sprint/Nextel was sending a Motorola phone for. But, he (the owner) had no answers. 2nd reason for quitting. )

In retro-spect I do not regret quitting.

this whole sprint/nextel merger always seemed a little off and misleading to customers (in my opinion).

obviously, the nextel iden network doesn't really have the coverage capabilities as sprint does. but it's somewhat cool that sprint is at least introducing a handset which talks on sprint's cdma network, and ptt's on the nextel iden network. it's a good way to blend their customer base in nextel's already established coverage areas.

granted it won't help you ptt in an area not yet covered by nextel, but at least sprint customers have the future option of chirping to their nextel business partners and friends.

That was why I started to work as a Sprint/Nextel third party rep. I was and still am impressed by Sprint/Nextel. But, I was in a bad place to learn about Sprint's future goals and capabilites. I feel that now (being here in the Cell Phone Forums) I will and have learned much more.

Thanks for all the time, replies, and research that you all have done to help. Thank you for your comments and input. It really has helped me alot. I will look for future updates.

Hey all! I found this on your site under "Altel is History!". A quote from Agenthibby, moderator.

What is going to happen with Sprint
This fall Motorola will have a phone that does CDMA on PCS and iDEN mainly for PTT will come out to push NEXTEL customers to Sprint's PCS network. In 2007/08 Sprint will be upgrading to EVDO Rev A. Once most of its network is Rev A ready and PTT on Rev A is launched SMR phones with iDEN will be phased out. iDEN will be shut down sometime in 2010~12.
    I guess that answers everything?!?!
