Phone as a modem

I'm currently with Nextel, my contract has been up for a while and I'm looking at some options on switching. My wife talks on the phone alot and a bunch of her friends are with Sprint, so we could probably get a cheaper plan and do the mobile to mobile thing and nights starting early thing.

Someone told me that Sprint offers a data service where you can use your phone as a modem for like forty bucks a month, and with the EVDO on certain phones that's pretty fast. I currently have cable internet and it's forty bucks a month but when I get rid of the phone service with that company the internet will increase to fifty bucks a month. So is it worth it to use the Sprint service as my primary internet by hooking the phone up to my Desktop or Laptop or not? And if so, what are the best phones that have that capability. Thanks.

As you might already now, Sprint now starts the Nights & Weekends minutes at 7pm instead of 9pm, and you can pay a little extra to start at 6pm. That alone saves me a ton of money, and since the mobile-to-mobile includes Nextel and Boost, the Family Share plan is an even better deal because mobile-to-mobile is included at no extra charge on share plans.

I honestly can't speak for Sprint's modem-as-phone deal, I just don't know much about it. I do know it works anywhere you have Sprint service, which is really nice for people who travel with laptops. You can also get a PCMCIA modem card from Sprint instead of using your phone, if you prefer. If you'd like to call and ask someone, you can usually get directly through to a person by calling 1.877.812.1223 (it's for business support but they'll help anyone who calls, and usually no hold time!)

What I do know is that if you want to use the EVDO high speed internet, you need to make sure you're in an EVDO area and have an EVDO capable phone. Here is a list of EVDO-capable phones you can get through Sprint. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but call that toll-free number and they'll be glad to answer any questions you still have. (Write it down, save it in your phone! I can usually get right through to a person rather than holding forever with *2).

Thanks for the help. I really wanted to give Verizon or Tmobile a shot, but with the amount of time my wife talks on the phone to other Sprint customers, the mobile to mobile and early nights really makes a difference in cutting down on the plan minutes which will save money.

I will save that phone number. I looked at the phones. My phone choice will be between the Fusic and the Samsung A900 as I like those the best for looks and they have the features I want. Thanks again for the help.
