I can purchase from a private individual a new in unopened box Motorola RAZR from T-Mobile complete with SIM card. He says he can give me the "unlocking code" which I can enter to unlock the phone.
In addition to the "unlocking code" would I also need associated software & special cable? My objective would be to use the phone with a prepaid GSM provider.

But I'm not quite sure about this because I have never unlocked a RAZR. If you do need the cable and program you can get it for cheap.

You can call T-Mobile CS to request them to unlock the phone. CS will do it for you with no questions asked.

not true in this case! T-Mobile will only unlock if you are a t-mobile customer. But even if you know someone who has T-Mobile, give the phone to them and they can have it unlocked using there customer ID info (as long as they have been with T-Mobile for 90days, they will unlock any t-mobile phone for them)
Not trying to argue, just speaking from experience.

I was actually referring to if wwt bought it from T-Mobile, because that's what was mentioned as a possibility. And as for giving the phone to someone with T-Mobile to get them to have it unlocked, that won't work either. When a customer calls in to have it unlocked, the CS rep will check the account for the IMEI number. That's the serial number listed in the back of the phone. It's gotta match the one on record or we won't unlock it.

well right now I'm sitting with a phone that was supposedly unlocked, and t mobile wont unlock it, and motorola just sends me back to t-mobile. the guy I bought it from is claimning to be contacting t-mobile and says it'll take a few days. Why does it have to be so difficult. I'm not using my phone on t-mobile wether its locked or not. I cant even get it within 500 miles. I've been trying to get a new phone now for half a year and its just one problem after the next. I'm so tired... So lets say I gave you my IMEI, a phone that was used on t-mobile, could it be unlocked, or not?

In order for T-Mobile customer service to unlock the phone,
-you have to be under a contract
AND
-you have to have been using your phone for at least 3 months
tmo trainer, at least that's what it said the last time I read streamline

Tmobile will also unlock a prepaid account after 90 days of service and a refill in the last 30 days.
What kind of phone is it? There are some easy and free options as well. Especially for nokias.
