I am a T-mobile subscriber and I currently get no signal at home. My phone does pick up signal from an AT&T tower, but I am not able to make calls, it just says "emergency only". My question is... can the phone be unlocked to receive any network? When I travel my phone will pick up AT&T and a few other networks that DO allow me to make calls, so can I do this from home?

Certain areas you can Roam on ATT and other areas you cant. There is nothing you can do to change this. You will always be able to call 911 on it nothing else though.
Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

If you have good cell service every where but at home, your options are:

1 Change to a different service provider.

2 Use T-Mobile's Unlimited Hot Spot Calling (if you have Internet using a Wireless router or wireless cable/dsl modem), for $10.00 a month. You'd also need a cell phone that has Wifi calling as well. Only you would know if the added cost of a wireless router, wifi phone (if you don't already own one), would be worth it on top of you current voice plan+hotspot calling.

Unlocking your phone will ONLY allow you to put another carriers SIM card in you phone, you will of course have to have a second account with that carrier if you plan to keep your T-mobile account, for all calls outside of your home.

Otherwise if AT&T offers service at your home and everywhere else you use the phone, it might be time to switch to At&t for you.

With t-mobile yes if you close the account before the contract ends... YES its a $175 ETF fee.

BUT now here is the thing in YOUR CASE!!!
call Tmobile tell them your address that you are living and say that your reception is really bad in your area. They will check your housing area and if you want to cancel with them because of BAD RECEPTION as your reason they will cancel it any time without any ETF. Tmobile though has GREAT customer service and will get some towers there and work on it so that area gets good reception. Its just a matter of you letting them know.

    good luck
