Is this phone known by another name, or does anyone have any information
on it? I'm finding it hard to find out a great deal about it or what
GPS systems could work with it.

I've been toying with the idea of replacing my old Sony Clie and old
mobile phone for a Windows powered handheld with GSM but have been put
off by their size and cost - the MDA Compact II looks nice, small, and
will sync with Outlook with a nice amount of data transfer on Web-n-walk
    for £13 for 9 mths, £28 for 5 mths, and £13 thereafter.

Yes, it's an HTC and is available from nearly all the networks under
    different names.

It is a standard PocketPC and runs loads of GPS, though I'd recommend
    Copilot 6.

    Re: T-Mobile MDA Compact II

Just bought one myself - it runs Windows 5.0 and is quad band - comes
    in pink or graphite.

I have taken out exactly that plan - compared to what I'm having to pay
on Orange for web access, it's unbelievably cheap.

As well as Excel & Word, you can read pdf & powerpoint files. If it's
not already on there, I would recommend spb software to keep a check of
    data used.

    Hi

I recently set up the following site that tells you all the best deals
on these smart phones as well as their alias' on each network:
    http://www.mobilechecker.com/mobile_...tariff=0&adv=a

I know you can get a gps nav kit as an add on but not sure on prices or
    effectiveness of these I'm afraid...

Thanks Simon and others for your help.

Some sources refer to Windows Mobile 5 and others Windows Mobile 2003
Second Edition. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer nor
which is the newer - what did yours have, and do you have the MDA
Compact or MDA Compact II ?

    Re: T-Mobile MDA Compact II

I have had the Orange SPV M500 aka o2 xda mini aka mda compact aka
imate jam etc (tri-band) running Windows 2003SE since August.

I have also just acquired the pink Compact II which says on the box
that it is quad band and runs Windows 5.0

I have TomTom 5 on the SPV M500 (I got it free with a wifi card!) but
haven't bothered getting a GPS receiver for it. As I travel by
tube/train, I've now got the Greater London A-Z on it instead, which
suits my needs better - the problem for me with TomTom was that the
train stations, road names etc appear/disappear depending on scale plus
I was unable to stop TomTom permanently searching for a receiver, which
ran my battery down very quickly - neither of these would necessarily
be problems for a car driver of course!

I make full use of diary (you might find spb diary software useful),
calendar, notes, tasks, excel, word, all of which sync automatically
when connected to usb port for charging.

Orange text alerts plus Orange email gives me almost instantaneous
    email.

Also pdf viewer is very useful as I can now read faxes (bt bills etc)
sent to me via fax to email (thanks, Inweb!)

AFAIK only T-Mobile have released Compact II so far, but it sounds as
if their tariff would suit your needs best anyway - I think they may
have a special deal on Co-Pilot or some other SatNav also.

That's a relief. All the mentions of it I've seen have been that awful
pink, so I decided I don't want one.

People with the almost-identical previous model tell me it's not great
as a mobile because it's hard to dial one-handed. But it's a great
little PDA. If only it had wi-fi as well...

It is a great little PDA and Windows Mobile 5 is much better for one handed
use than 2003SE. So it is improved as a phone.

Microsoft's voice control software that you can buy is also surprisingly
    good.

If you want wifi then you need the HTC Wizard (MDA Vario, imate K-Jam etc
etc). That is practically the same size but has wifi and a slide-out full
    QWERTY keyboard. It's very nice!

    Cheers
    Marc

Looks much the same size, but thicker (as you'd expect, I suppose).

Unfortunately, the 2.5mm headphone socket and mini-SD socket are also
both disadvantages, and combined with the 33% extra thickness, they
make it that much less desirable.

As far as I can make out the Mini II still has a proper SDIO slot.
Does it have a 3.5mm headphones socket?

    That and the slower processor.

you might want to look at the MDA III, just being released by T-Mobile, My
company is switching to these, got mine yesterday, and it has Wifi,
    Bluetooth, GSM & GPRS.
Comes with WinPC 2003, Pocket Outlook 2002, and other bits. Seems quite
nice, not tried it with GPS yet, though I might transfer my Navman from the
    Ipaq to try it.

I'm not interested if it is any bigger than the Compact: that's as big
a phone as I want to carry.
