6230i and Nokia PC Suite problems.

I posted before about problems with Nokia 6230i and infrared, but I
think the problem is more basic than that.

AIUI there are four ways to connect the phone to the Nokia PC Suite:
cable, USB, infrared (IR) or Bluetooth. I do not have cable or USB, my
laptop seems to support IR but when I try to install Bluetooth from
Nokia PC Suite I get a "cannot use connection type" error.

When trying to use any of the functions on PC Suite I get the "no phones
connected" error and the application itself says "phone disconnected".

How do I get round this problem. Do I need to get a cable / USB or can
it be done with IR? Am I just doing something basically wrong here?

I don't totally understand the IR system on my computer. OTOH, under
"Wireless Link" in control panel no devices are listed under the
"hardware" section; but then in "device manager" the IR driver name is
listed and the device is said to be working properly.

From PC SUite help file:

Infrared modem installation does not seem to work with Windows XP.
If your PC is running Windows XP, you must install the Nokia mobile
phone infrared (IrDA) modem manually.

So, how do I do that then?

Infrared modem installation seems to be a nightmare with XP - Motorola
gave me a way of doing it for a Motorola I used to have via a piece of
German software, but I still couldn't get it to work.

I would strongly recommend purchase of data cable - I got one for a
6230i (genuine Nokia data cable ) from Comms Wholesale for just a fiver
via ebay, and have bought several bits & pieces from them since.
