I recently aquired a phone from my sister. The SE T610. On a mission of
discovery I find that its running R1L013 firmware and since this version
there had been a major improvement with faster menus, faster Java, digital
    camera improvements to quality etc..

Is there any likelihood of getting this one upgraded to R3C002 now its out
of warranty and not in a contract? Can it been done? If so, where and how
much is it likely to cost to do it?

Can it be downloaded and done at home?

    Thanks

If you want to do it yourself you'll need (at least) a Terminator dongle and
the correct firmware files. Alternatively, any of the regular unlockers
that post here can do it for you.

Alternatively, if you have a DSS-25 base, you can update it yourself using
    the update service at http://www.sonyericsson.com/

I don't have one. Infact, I don't even know what a DSS-25 base is. Anyone
care to tell me what one is please?

Well you learn something new every day. I had no idea you could update the
T610 via SEUS until you posted - thanks for that.

It's a little desktop stand that takes a charger cable and USB cable,
and allows your phone to synch with the PC and recharge its battery
whenever you put the phone in it.

    I think they're between £20 and £25, which is why I don't have one!

Can be had for much cheaper on Ebay though. They also work with the K700i.
They are great for syncing with the PC, as well as the aforementioned
    firmware updating purpose.

I *think* it's only fairly recently that they enabled this capability -
around the same time as the new updater software IIRC.

So if you had one of these DSS-25 base units, does that mean you could
    update the firmware yourself?
What addition support would you need Simon? Software etc to do the job? Oh
and despite looking on the website mentioned above, I failed to find the
firmware downloads section. Can you give me a direct link to download the
    latest T610 firmware please.

    Yes.

    None.

That would be because there isn't one. When SEUS is installed and run it
automatically downloads the relevant firmware for your handset and installs
    it.

I suspect there are some considerable risks involved in upgrading the
firmware. Do you know of anyone who tried upgrading their T610 (or other)
and ended up with a non-functioning mobile. Rather dangerous methinks.

I would suspect there are fewer risks using an official route such as SEUS.

    > Do you know of anyone who tried upgrading their T610 (or other)
    > and ended up with a non-functioning mobile.

Yep, hundreds of them (none using T610's through SEUS though - but one or
two K700's have come our way due to failed upgrades through SEUS). However,
it is fairly difficult to render a modern SE handset completely U/S. Most
can be revived using the right equipment.

As the saying goes, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Only if you have a crap internet connection.

I do it for customers in my shop all the time using an Orange 3G
datacard as the link, and none have failed yet. It's an excellent
service and SonyEricsson are to be commended.

Nearly as good as FMA and bluetooth, I expect.

Having said that, I'd like to update the firmware in my T610.
