N70 "screen saver" - pointless?

My new Nokia N70 (a great handset) has a "screen saver" feature which
displays the time in a stripe across the screen, after the backlight
has gone off.

I am aware that the backlight going off saves power, but does the
screen saver save power too? I can't imagine it can, since the screen
is still actually on.

Can I disable it without affecting my battery life?

I have a 6680 which does the same, but cant find anyway on mine.

I have the same phone on Tmobile and and displays some screensaver crap
everytime you use it and then turn it off, very annoying, anyone know how to
get rid?

I haven't found a way to get rid of it entirely, but you can set the
delay very large (30 mins) and replace the logo with a clock.

To increase the delay:

1. Find "Settings" in the menu (a spanner icon) and run it.
2. Select "Phone"
3. Select "Display".
4. Change "Power saver time-out" to 30 minutes. (The highest setting on
my N70.)

This may affect your battery life - I'm not sure.

To get rid of the logo:

1. Find "Themes" in the menu (two masks icon) and run it.
2. Select your theme, push options, then Edit.
3. Change "Power Saver" to "Date and time". (Or "Text" if you like.)

Done.

I understood that it also prevents damage to the screen by it continually
moving down every minute, so as not to 'burn' images into the screen. I'm
not sure if this is still an issue with today's screens or not?

Every series 60 phone I've had has been like this. I certainly don't think
it's 'pointless' - It's a continuously moving object that (on my 6680 at
least), tells me the date, time, number a missed calls, emails, text
messages, and what profile my phone is currently in.

Modern LCDs have been immune to screen burn for years. Even the very
early ones only got "temporary burn", which could be wiped by
displaying brightly coloured images.

So no, it's not an issue.

I had several new Nokias and Ericssons and got rid of them all because the
screen saver
prevents you from seeing there is a voice or text message (without having to
fiddle with buttons),
- really stupid !

The only colour screen phone I found that can be set to keep the display on
is Motorola ROKR,
didn't mind the MP3 player, but I didn't really want fuzzy camera with 10
sec video !

Now I just use plain B&W Nokia 1100 on which the screen saver is optional
and in any case gets overridden if a message is received.

The screen reverts to a low power mode when the 'screen saver' is active -
so it saves extra power.

You can still see if there is a message waiting, a little envelope icon
appears beneath the clock.

If that isn't big enough try ClockSaver
