Faxing on UK mobile phone networks

1. Which UK mobile phone networks support sending faxing (please don't
bother telling me about receiving faxes). O2 have recently told me that
they have "stopped supporting faxing".

2. Which mobile phones have fax modems?

Faxing from a laptop remains the best and cheapest alternative to
buying a mobile printer.

Orange definitely support it, handset permitting.

I seem to remember Orange setting up a separat number for data for me
on request, and getting the ability to then send and receive faxes on
my i-mate Jam using Truefax.

Interesting. Allows you to send a fax by SMS, maximum 160 characters,
charge £0.36.

I want to send proper faxes. E.g. Word document or Excel sheet sent by
fax to hotel reception, which acts as a remote printer. That was what
PC faxing was supposed to be about!

Does anyone know of any other commercial service that lets you send
faxes by email. I don't want to pay monthly fees.

The only alternative is to set up a fax back from my own PC (i.e. if
message is received with specific subject, then forward it to specific
recipient, which is fax number of hotel). I have done this for two
hotels and it works fine, but I'm not in control of when the fax gets
sent.

where fax_number is in the international format but without the + eg.
01234 567 890 becomes 441234567890

It's FREE (usage limit applies per email address - something like no
more than 15 faxes per hour)

IIRC In the UK, the service is provided by demon internet so all faxes
you send have an advert for demon on the front page - then your
document starts on the next page.

AFAIK it currently supports normal email text, TIFF and postscript
files

It supports only text files and uses proportionate letters and line
breaks. It is great for sending short messages provided you add the
recipient's details to your contacts details, since it's not easy to
remember. You can add line breaks and spaces in the recipient's name,
by using "/" (backslash) and "_" (underscore).

It's not very good for longer messages or for getting printouts of Word
of Excel files when you are away from the office/home.

It would be great if it supported TIF files but frankly, as it's free,
it's great for what it does do.

Find a standard postscript printer driver, print yout word or excel
document to a file. Email that file.

I didn't know O2 had "stopped supporting faxing"! It is quite a while
since I sent a fax using my old Psion 5mx and Ericsson T39 phone, but
when I did, it worked very well; and came out of my inclusive minutes!

I must get on to customer services and ask them why.

O2 told me they've "stopped supporting faxing" but were unable to say
whether that meant you can't send a fax any more or they don't offer
customer support. Since my phone doesn't do faxes anyway, I can't try
out. Perhaps someone with a fax comaptible phone and an O2 account
could try sending a fax? The reason for my question is that I'm about
to finish my 12 month contract and need to know the options, i.e. stick
with O2 but get a phone that does faxing or what.

O2's "Please don't terminate your contract with us" department
confirmed that O2 _does_ support faxing.

It is impossible to find fax compatible mobiles on the Internet (I have
tried, believe me). Also, neither O2 nor Vodafone were any help.
Therefore, the only way is to ask people who have phones which can send
faxes, what phone do you have? If enough people reply, I might even
post the phone models up on a website somewhere to help other poor sods
like me.
