I have been advised, wrongly I suspect, that it is posible to convert
my existing Nokia car kit (CARK-91) to accept a newr phone,
specifically a Nokia 6280, by means of a new cradle and wiring harness
Can anyone advise if this is true, or am I going to have to fork out
for a complete new kit - probably the CK-7W?

You can use the Nokia CA-55 converter cable and CR-43 cradle, however
this setup will not charge the 6280 when in the cradle or any other
Nokia handset beyond the 6230i.

CK-7W or wait for a bit as the CK-20W is almost here.

Many thanks - what functionality is expected from the CK-20W over the
7W?

The CK-20W is being marketed as a multimedia kit.

The biggest problem with the CK-7W is it's wired compatibly with S60
handsets like the E and N series, hopefully the CK-20W fixes this and
will be more future proof.
Of course if you don't care about such things then a CK-7W and CR-43
cradle will work. Also don't forget there is no aerial coupler on the
cradle and no separate aerial coupler is available.
Sam.

Thanks Sam - which kit would I need if I required an exrenal aerial
(as I have with my CARK-91 presently)?

It's determined by the cradle. As I said the CR-43 for the 6280
doesn't have integrated aerial coupler and doesn't support an external
one.
There is no other Nokia cradle available for the 6280, which is why I
went with a 6233 and CR-56 cradle which does have a integrated aerial
coupler myself.
The aerial connection is passive and is slightly more useful than a
chocolate teapot.
Blame Nokia...
