I've an old but hellishly reliable 6310i still working unlocked but wondered
if there was a modern equivalent with phenomenal battery life and
dependability without bells and whistles? Any group
thoughts/recommendations?

Hi
If you go to www.nokia.co.uk, then products, all their current models
are listed on there.

Or possibly the 6233 but neither of them are as good in my opinion and
they don't have anything likes as good a key pad however the O2Jet
mentioned by Harry looks like something that may be worth investigation.
The 6310i Weight 111 g Dimensions 129 x 47 x 17 mm, 97 cc
Ultra slim, Li-Po 1100 mAh (BPS-2) Stand-by up to 17 days which is 408
hours and a Talk time of up to 6h
The 6230 is 97g, 103 x 44 x 20 mm, 76 cc which is smaller and lighter
with 150 - 300 h stand by and 3 - 5 h talk time according to Nokia.
The 6233 is listed as 110g, 108 x 46 x 18 mm, 81cc with up to 340 h
stand by and up to 4 h talk time.
O2 Jet Weight 121 g (so a little heavier) but similar dimensions 117 x
47 x 20 mm but what is impressive is stand-by up to 540 h and Talk time
of up to 9 h 50 min. If the key pad is usable, the quality good and
reception is anything near to that of the 6310i then it may be worth a
look.

A new 6310i.
I'm not joking, wouldn't use anything else. They're still available, if
you look.

Don't even think about a 6233 unless you'll never want more than 500
contacts held in the phone. The 6233 has an artificial limit that
does not go even if you have spare RAM. Any you can't store contacts on
the memory card either.
I had a 6310i, then a 6230 then a 6230i, all of which have been great.
I recently "upgraded" to a 6233 but sent it back to Orange on the 7 day
guarantee because of this 500 contacts limit - I need rather more than
that for my job.

After getting frustrated at the battery life and fiddley nature of my
6230, I'm seriously considering going back to my 6310i, or perhaps
getting another new one (as mine has developed a frustrating keyboard
fault).
Do I use the camera on the phone? No. Or the MP3 player? No.
The main frustration is that when I decided that it was time for a
change a while back I got the missus a new phone as well and changed
over all the charging bases and car kits to pop port ones, and a lot of
the old stuff has now gone.

Heard a rumour a while back that Nokia were thinking of bringing the

Next question then has to be if they were to do that with the advent of
new technology what improvements would you like to see made to the
6310i?

None really, I like it as it is, they got it right first time.
Although if pressed, I'd rather like to see NetMonitor available, I got
rather used to that on my 6150.

I suppose it depends what you mean by "modern equivalent". If you mean a
*mobile phone* that does everything a *mobile phone* should, well, without
trying to be a music player or portable TV or anything silly, then no - the
phone manufacturers all seem convinced that phones should be MP3 players,
video cameras and all sorts.
There have been a couple of models that have come close, but even they
haven't quite hit the spot.
There's the Nokia 6230i, but the battery life isn't as good for starters.
Then I've heard too many reports about its software stability for my liking
(ok, some early 6310i's weren't great here but later firmware fixes that
very nicely), it has a colour screen which never seems very clever in bright
sunlight, and it has an MP3 player and other "bells and whistles". Sorry
Nokia, but I've got an iPod and such for that.
There's the Nokia E50 according to the latest What Mobile magazine. But
that's a Series 60 Smartphone - enough said.
The O2 Jet that a couple of other posters have suggested, does seem better
than most (no 3G or camera, decent battery life, MMS receive only). I'm
still not convinced though - perhaps it's the colour screen that I'd like to
see first hand in awkward sunlight.. And it'll mean tearing out my carkit
which still has plenty of life in it.
So on balance, nope the market for spare 6310i's seems pretty safe for those
people who want a mobile phone to do the basics and do them well....
Maybe I'm just a stick-in-the-mud, but Nokia did very well when they made
the 6310i - and any other phone will have to do equally well to better it.

Jon.

This isn't the first time I've heard this comment, and I seriously doubt
it'll be the last!!

*And* fit the car kit without mucking about with adaptors. *And* have an
external aerial socket in the right place..! (Are there *any* phones with
this now..?)
