Dual Sim Phones

Type "Dual Sim Phone" into Ebay and you get hundreds of results for
new phone models that take two SIMs which are active *simultaneously*.
This would be a god send for people like me who have to carry around
and keep charged two phones (work and personal). Unlike the adapters
and holders, dual sim phones allow you to make to and receive calls
from either SIM without switching the phone off & on, cutting up your
SIMs, etc.

I don't expect either the networks nor phone manufacturers will like
this development. The networks won't like the as it means people will
make fewer out-of-bundle personal phone calls as you can use your work
SIM instead (as long as work doesn't mind), and the major
manufacturers will see fewer phone sales because people will own one
phone rather than two. I don't expect to see them in Phones4U anytime
soon.

So great concept, but do they work? Has anyone bought one of these
phones? Are they compatible with UK SIMs? I have an Orange and a
Vodaphone SIM. Any quirks or foibles? I see some of the smaller
online retailers have also started stocking them, eg

I don't want a bells and whistles smartphone\pda, just a smallish
phone with decent battery life and bluetooth. Any recomendations?

Surely, if the phone manufacturers don't like this development they
wouldn't be making them.... or are you suggesting the phones are being
made by people other than phone manufacturers...

Sorry meant major phone manufacturers, who aren't. The dual-sim
feature is being pioneered exclusively by relatively small players.

Why haven't Motorola & co released a dual-sim model then? Surely they
have vastly bigger R&D budgets? Could it be they don't want to upset
their cosy relationship with the networks, both of whom would be
negatively impacted if people stopped buying phones with their
contracts because they can just slot them into their existing dual-sim
phone.

So does anyone in the UK have a dual sim phone yet?

If it means that everyone buys two phones, then I'm sure they'd love
everyone to carry two...

Yes. I had one fo the touch screen jobbies for evaluation a couple of
months ago. Made in China (there's a surprise!), it was surprisingly good.

I've got four, although I only have two with me at any one time most of
the time. However, they're all PAYG and I probably spend about 20 quid a
year across all 4 of them, so I don't think they care too much about me
;-)

Well, the networks/service suppliers probably hate you, but the I guess the
Manufacturers have got their money, so in their eyes, you're an Ok kinda
guy...

I know this was a joke but my mate has 20 phones 7 in active service
all on different networks and some on same network different deals. He
likes to avoid x net calls;-) Maybe he should be in the guiness book
of records.;-)

Actually, one's personal, one's for work, one is for text messages
(retained purely because it has the original Orange Out Here pack on it)
and one's a spare in case I lose any of the others.

I've got four.

One anytime O2 X-Net, one off-peak O2 only, 1 Orange PAYG with Sat Nav and 1
works.

I'm kind of hoping the Orange PAYG one serve as a Tracker if the car ever
gets nicked!! Cheaper than a tracker too!!
