I have an LG VX4400 phone that was originally on Verizon service. I know
that US Cellular also used to sell these phones. A person with USCC service
wants to buy the phone from me because their original phone has failed.
Would they be able to register this phone on USCC's network?

It's technologically compatible, as US Cellular migrated their network to CDMA
a couple years ago and Verizon's always used CDMA. Verizon prepay phones are
locked, but their postpay phones are not, so you can take them to another
carrier. The only question is whether USCC will activate a Verizon phone. Ask
    them.

USCC doesn't like to activate phones branded for other carriers. But it can
be done. My suggestion, have them call USCC customer service, request an
ESN change. Don't tell them its a Verizon branded phone. Then once the ESN
change is done, just have them to OTA program the phone. Doing just *228
will not work as the Verizon PRL in the phone will dictate what network it
looks for. Tell them to add either "00" or "01" onto the end of it when
doing the over the air programming. 00 if USCC is the A side carrier for
that area, 01 if they are the B side carrier. If they don't know which they
are, just have them try both and the one that allows them to program the
phone is it. That should do the trick.

What if they're a PCS carrier, as in Chicago?

    If the VX4400 is a tri-mode phone or is dual-band digital-only you'll still be
fine. I don't know of any Verizon phones that have been sold within the past
few years that don't run on 1900 MHz as well as 800 MHz.

Actually, I was asking what suffix to add to *228. I know the 4400 will
work on USCC because they also sold them.

Back when I had USC they wouldn't activate my verizon phone, the thing that pissed me off was that I called them before I bought it. Thats one of the many reasons I hated UsCellular, and now I switched to verizon. If they had good national reception I would get them as they have good deals on rate plans.
