I just upgraded to a smart phone and recieved a bunch of info in the mail.
I read in utter amazement regarding overage on the data plan - additional overage billed at just $.49/mb.
Does anyone realize that is $490.00/gb???
That is so above punitive it borders on criminal!
When I inquired about this I was astonished at the responses from the local and corporate office.
The responses ranged from "The average is less than 5gb of use" therefore you are not likely to go over. Hello?? anyone home? The average means 1/2 do go over.
The next response was "well... we have a clause where we don't charge over $200.00 for additional data useage." Really? I didn't see that in the paperwork I was sent. Can you imagine recieving an additional $200.00 charge for going over .5 gb. If you stream much you will go over.
The last response from USCellular's Customer service was "Well Verizon only offers 2gb plans. we offer 5gb."
not true. Verizon has 5gb plans and charges $10.00 per gig overage.
Just for clarification. I have been a USC customer for over 6 years, ever since I found they have the best coverage in this area. They still have the best coverage but this kind of "competitive" corporate response leaves me thinking
HMMMM...
Anyone thinking what I'm thinking?????

Re: rates for data on us cellular
Actually, it's $501.76 a gb! Sometimes you really need to read the fine print before you sign contracts. This is how phone companies make money.
But I think they meant to say mb where they said gb. It's really hard to use a gb of data on a phone unless you have it hooked up to a laptop and are downloading tons of stuff. There are apps out there to monitor how much data you are using.
Here's some more recent data to illustrate what I'm saying:
Average U.S. Smartphone Data Usage Up 89% as Cost per MB Goes Down 46% | Nielsen Wire
fyi the rate of data consumption is growing so rapidly because of 4g use and data getting cheaper.

Re: rates for data on us cellular
Hi John,
I checked both sources. I called customer service w/ USCellular and I checked with Verizon also. The rates stated are correct.
If you stream much, you'd be surprised at how fast it gets used up. We have a 5gb mi-fi and we have to watch it near the end of the month. We live in the country. We download netflix because it is cheaper. Also I have unlimited data on my office Verizon plan so that helps make up any time needed for surfing the internet.
If there were any doubt I'd go over w/ the USC plan I'd drop it in a minute.
I can't imagine such disparity in competing companies.

Re: rates for data on us cellular
The data service on your cell phones is not meant for streaming, if you want to stream that's what desktops and laptops are for. It's extrememly hard to go over that 5Gb if it's used the correct way. Sure Verizon offers a 5 GB plan as well, but it's almost two times what US Cellular's costs. For the price of USC's 5GB Verizon only offers 2GB. And unlimited doesn't always mean unlimited. When I was with Verizon after 2GB I noticed that my speed slowed and I had continued problems with my data service afterwards until my data services started over for the cycle. And your comment about Verizon only charging 10 per GB over, so you mean to tell me that if I'm already paying 30.00 for only 2GB if I go over as much as 3more GB I'm pay an extra 30.00 which is two times what USC charges for 5GB. I've been with a lot of cell phone companies and I've only been satified with the services I receive at USC. If you're going to stream, get a laptop, it's COMMON SENSE.
