Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
Neither me, my parents, brother or sister have land-lines, only cell phones. If you are worried about going over your minutes, metroPCS or Cricket would be great for you if they are offered in your area. They both have unlimited minutes with nationwide long distance starting at $40/mo.

Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
Its not so much the minutes as the convenience of a hard line... if there is any, i was just wondering if day to day living... a hard phone was miss for some reason.

Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
My Cell phone is my main phone. My landline is for DSL and a backup no frills phone line, that only work and a couple people have as an emergency number. That way any calls to my home phone are going to be important, rather than chit chat.
Everyone calls my cell phone, since 98% of the time I'm not at home (which is why no one has the home phone number).

Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
We use our cells as our primary numbers, but we have a landline as well. In Florida, the threat of severe tropical weather is enough that we don't mind paying the $15 or whatever it is for a basic single-line phone with no call waiting or anything like that, because "Ma' Bell" usually keeps working even in a widespread power outage. I'm not sure we could say the same for our cells, because the towers are dependent on lots of high voltage power.
Oh, also I don't send a lot of faxes, but it's an added bonus to be able to send and receive faxes at home when the need arises. So, in summary we never use our landline for anything but it's there for emergencies and ya never know when you'll need it. Say for example that while handling an emergency situation at home such as an accident, in all the panic and confusion your cell phone falls in a toilet or something? Got a backup line if you need to dial 911?
edit: I have cable internet, so DSL is not an issue for me. Cable is faster and with the way it's bundled into my cable package I would save less than $10/month switching to DSL.Last edited by Brad729; 07-15-2006 at 07:35 AM.

Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
I also have thought of dropping the home phone line. When I mention this to people though I have been told that every home should have a hard line. There's too much risk in your cell phone possibly having no signal at a time you need to call 911. They say to just keep the basic line. Costs about $10-15 a month. No bells and whistles. Just a simple line. That way you don't have to worry about either not being able to find your phone in an emergency or possibly having no signal. It's worth $10 a month for the peace of mind.

Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
I have a landline for 2 reasons. One is that I need it for DSL. However, we're getting wireless internet in my area within the next month (modem is wireless through a gigantic city-wide WiFi network). Second is that I'm sitting next to a small mountain, and I don't get any service inside my home, and only 0 to 1 bars outside my home. That said, I recently picked up a Wilson wireless amplifier, and now I have full bars in my home.
I will be dropping my landline within the next month when the wireless internet becomes available.
As for 911, I don't find it to be an issue. Response time for police averages at around 12 minutes in North America, so even if I had to run outside to dial, no big deal, as no one would show up any faster anyways. And since a LOT of people use cordless phones on their landlines, one could argue that the chances the cordless battery is dead is just as likely as not have any signal on your cell phone.
And I'm not sure about you guys in the USA, but up here in Canada, all cell sites have either battery or generator backups. We had a huge power outage this past winter for about 8 hours (the house was getting pretty cold !), and we never lost cellular service.

Re: Anyone Use A Cell Phone As A Their Main Phone
I have one line as a second line/DSL and my main line, which I had for over 20 years, but in today’s word with cell phones I think I will due away with my main line and just keep my DSL line. I’ve been use my cell phone at home for the longest time now as it, so disconnecting my hard line won't be such a big deal.
