    Hi,
I have an unlocked Nokia 3220 and my spouse claims he can tell when I call him from a network other than my usual one, i.e. when I change my SIM from my home network to another. This happens even though I have hidden my number as private.
How is this possible? He claims it has something to do with him knowing the IMEI of my phone.
Has he put some kind of software on my phone or is it a function of his. Would this also allow him to track my location remotely?
Very nervous about this as we're separated!

Re: Monitoring me via my phone

Sounds like your spouse is feeding you a line of Bull pies, and their still steaming.

While it's very possible that he may have fiddled with your phone's settings to make it always show caller ID when calling his number.

To check this look at the contact listing for his number. And see if anything has been added to the call string (phone number), if anything other than the area code and number has been entered, delete it.

Also check the Send ID and see if it's set to always send or not.

And unless he works for the cell carrier you have, he's not about to be able to track you due to you using your phone. At least not with that phone anyway.
He knows you well enough to know you will believe pretty much anything he says to you. Let him play his games, and unless he proves to you through his actions that he knows where you are at any given moment, just write him off as one of the many mind bullies out there.

Nokia 3220 Specs & Features (Phone Scoop) shows no GPS or other tracking features for this phone. If there are any Java apps on the phone that you didn't put there or didn't come with the phone, just delete them.

And change your passwords on your online account, so he can't get access to your call records. I have a funny feeling if he's doing anything, that is what he is doing, looking at your online account and guessing where you are by who you are calling and figuring out, where you'd normally be that time of day.

If he is pinpointing your locations during the day, I'd say he has a GPS unit on/in your car, and is tracking locations that way (this can be done for a small fee every month and you can get tracking software to follow a car around if you want).

But you know this man better than anyone. Is he the type to spend hundreds of dollars to follow you around? Or is he the type that like to talk big be rarely has anything behind it?

If you are truely fearing him, contact the police.

Re: Monitoring me via my phone

    Thanks BlkBear,
I thought it was crap but he sounded so convincing that I was unnerved. My phone is pre-paid so there are not bills or call records from the company (legally). I hid the number via caller id and i don't see any of the other stuff you said, so i feel a lot better.
The bum is so cheap he wouldn't pay a dime to track my car so that's unlikely, but i'll check too.
Just for my info though, why would he need my IMEI? is that to check with the company and monitor activity? And do you know if the contents of text messages sent/received can be read by him or another party somehow?
    Thanks for the help,
    MariaMaria

Believe it or not, he claims that he knows when i send texts and to who!?
I checked with my service provider who say that they don't give out this kind of info to private citizens

no....and i know the providers cant read text messages at all. Verizon has a program called MARS that gives detailed records of text messages (just like a detailed call list...to who, from who, and when) but they wont access it for a customer even if asked to.

Thanks lots. I know enough now to call his bluff.
Out of interest though, of what use is it to him to know my IMEI? Can it actually be used for something, e.g. monitoring phone records or so, if one has the necessary contacts?
Can you set codes in your phone to see the IMEI of the phone calling you?

Re: Monitoring me via my phone

The IMEI is just the serial number of the phone. Each one has one, and each one is different. The cell phone carrier uses the IMEI number to attach calls, and services to the phone number of the account. No matter what SIM the phone is in, it will sutomatically show the IMEI of the phone it's in.

That way if you call in to say that phone #1 with IMEI 123 was stolen, but you have been using phone #2 with IMEI 456 since you have had the service, they will know you are trying to pull a fast one.

Why waste your energy calling his bluff? Just tell Dick Tracy to have fun tracking you. Then tell him he'd have a much better fantasy life if he played D&D online with the other kids.

    Thanks BlkBear,
Think I'll just put this one to sleep and see what happens from now on.
Seeing as you seem to know everything there is about cell phones (lol), is it true that you phone can only be located by the service company if it's turned on? If so, does it "disappear" when it's turned off, or do you have to take the battery out as well?

if the phone is turned off its not transmitting its coordinates by GPS...
you dont even have to take the battery out.
