I am actually from canada, but I am looking for some info on smartphones in general.

This october my current contract runs up and so I am looking for a new phone. I was originally looking for a wi-fi enabled phone, but i dont think i can afford it. Nor, can I afford to have a voice and data plan.... (phone plans are expensive up in the great ****ty north).

Therefore my main question... Is it worth it buying a smartphone (HTC, blackberry etc)... over a run of the mill cell phone if i do NOT have a data plan?

I thought having my email on the phone would be nice (via outlook) and most of the time i would just update it on a daily basis via USB. That way I could have access to already downloaded email wherever i go. Any other uses?

    Thanks for your help!!!

    Hey,

I know what you mean. I am in the same boat. Currently I am looking at Vzw,TM & AT&T. Under that realm the HTC Kaiser/8925 or the Blackberry Curve or the Samsung sch-i760. I know for most of them if you do get a PDA type phone you have to get a data plan. At least that is what I heard. What ever you do let us know.

    Good Luck.

the only reason why i am considering the htc 720 is because telus has a deal right now.... $99.99 for the phone on 3yr contract with a $40 student voice plan. otherwise you are right about the data plans and pda's

but i am hoping that i can convince telus to put the 720 on a 2yr contract (i assume they would charge me a little more for the phone)

i did just notice that telus has released the lg shine flip.... so that is a consideration now as well.
