    Hi,

    My first post so hello!

I have two main questions I'd like to know the answers to.

Short story is this; #1 issue is is I need to either get a better receiving phone or a better provider.

I'm past my contract date and am using a Blackberry 8310 on AT&T. I am sick & tired of "Call failed" messages, dropped connections when I am sitting still and talking with someone on a landline. I don't know if it is AT&T or this Blackberry but it happens daily and does not seem to be getting better.

Question 1 is How... might I figure this dilemma out without signing a contract and finding I should have changed providers &/or phone (And I think I want a wifi capable new phone. Read below)

My current blackberry does not have internet capability and with my next phone, I would like to have wifi internet access for web pages and my gmail email if I'm within range of a wireless router like I can do with my laptop. But I just don't need internet access all the time so I'm not willing to buy a data package.

#2 issue/question is; if I buy a phone that takes my sim & memory card and has wifi capability, can I use it with any wireless router that is open or I have the password to and browse the internet and get gmail directly? If I can browse the internet and can't get email, I can always just go to the gmail page to read & send but again, I have no idea about the wifi limitations with cell phones. If I can do this, I don't mind buying a used phone that will do this and slipping my SIM & memory cards into it.

When I've asked if I can get a wifi phone when signing a contract with AT&T or Verizon without getting a data plan, the answer at the kiosks is an emphatic no so I can't expect a straight answer from them on this question.

If I can't just get internet capability when I'm near a wireless router and the only option is to buy a data plan then I will have to forget wifi anything and either get a better hearing cell or a better provider. Which takes me back to question 1...

    Yeah, it's a loop...

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Gad, I need to bump this back up.

Look, I honestly don't know the answer to this question and knowing reality will make a lot of difference in my next phone service and phone.

If you know the answer and it's a silly question to you,.. humor me, I'm slow... please help me out.

    Thanks!

    I am on T-Mobile paygo.

I use T-Mobile blackberries in my home office. Since the 8120/8320/8820, these all have UMA¹. This allows you to connect to a wireless access point and get better coverage (AT&T requires you to buy a femtocell² - which is a restricted access wifi access point [AT&T phones only], only they charge you for it, and their phones have the UMA feature locked out, so you can't connect to any open WAP).

    Hi,
I think you need some special equipment that you can use at home. It is called cell phone booster.
It should help your to make signal batter.

Have you tried using a different SIM, perhaps just borrow one from a relative or a friend and pop it in your phone to check if there's any difference in signal strength? (That is if your phone is unlocked) This will save you the trouble of switching to another provider and getting the same problem like dropped calls and stuff if the problem actually lies with the phone itself.
