I have a question for everyone in this forum.
Would anyone be open to the idea of renting a cell phone.
Most people seem to want an upgraded phone before their two year contract is up.
Also, if your Iphone breaks, instead of purchasing a new one, just rent for the next 6 months until your plan is up for renewal.
There are various other reasons as well.
Just curious what kind of feedback people have on this idea?

    Re: Question? Cell Phone Rentals?

That's an interesting concept. I think a lot of people would have interest in renting a cell phone. The hard part would be handling the plan and phone number details. Would the rental cover the plan cost? Would numbers be transferred or would each phone have a unique non-changeable number?

    Re: Question? Cell Phone Rentals?

no, no plan included. at least my concept doesn't have it. I just started throwing this idea around so its not perfect.
you would switch out your sim card for att/T-Mobile.
If on verizon/sprint, you would have to goto your local store for them to move your number to that phone. But if done once every 6 months or so, I don't think that is too much hassle.

I've started two successful online businesses in the past and may start another!

    Re: Question? Cell Phone Rentals?

interesting idea indeed but sounds a bit complicated. What happens if the phone breaks? I think the advantage is more for the one renting the phone since he or she doesn't have to keep buying a new phone, as we all know technology upgrades at a very fast pace and no one want to be left with an outdated device so this idea sounds very tempting.

well I would offer insurance for a few extra dollars a month.
If the broke the phone or stole it, they would charged for the full price of the phone.

    Re: Question? Cell Phone Rentals?

I can agree with renting a cell phone. I have rented once few years ago and the minutes is already included on the monthly rental rates which has a lower rates compared to plan, but the thing is there will be no ownership once you rented a phone because you will always feel accountable once you break it(your deposit will be forfeited) unlike when you are on a plan, you are actually buying the unit itself. You have raised a very good logic though when it comes to being in contract for 2 years which makes no sense because cell phones evolves almost every month and by the time your contract ends, your cell phone is already obsolete. This is just what I think.

That' seems to be a viable business genre... as mentioned, complicated though.. but im sure there will be run around in any case.. RE: if the unit breaks.. im sure there will be sort of insurance to be paid by the customers, in case such scenario happens. including fortuitous events..

I agree with that idea... it is feasible indeed..

Its an interesting and different idea. In my view its very challenging to organize and manage this business. there will be a number of terms and conditions in this system.. However if someone can manage it, people will like to have a rental cell phone for desiring time period

I don't think there is any yet but as for the cost, no definite idea on how much it would cost but it would certainly be cheaper than a plan from a carrier otherwise it would defeat the purpose and would be pointless to go for this option rather than just getting a plan especially that the phone will never be yours anyway.

I was saying that if they did not have insurance and broke it, it would be full price
Obviously if they had insurance it would be a different story.

    Another question.
A problem I see is people stealing the phone and not being able to charge them.
Solution: Charge full price at the beginning of term, and credit customers back after they have returned the phone.
    What do you guys think?

    Re: Question? Cell Phone Rentals?

Yes a full price equivalent of the phone as security deposit sounds like a way around that problem but the thing is most people that will be renting a phone are those who do not have that much money to spend in one go that's why they have opted for the option of renting. Just a thought....
