Are all polyphonic ringtones just midi files or are some others special formats for different makes of phone? I was just trying to send one of mine (Sony Ericsson) to a another phone thru Ir (to a Nokia) and it just wouldn't send at all - is it anything to do with the file type or will Nokia just not take direct feed from another phone?

yea the IR was turned on on both of the phones and my polyphonics are all midi files, which i expected Nokia to be also, but when it tries to send the file is rejected by the Nokia almost immediately

how can you use Nokia browser between phones? I don't have one so i dont actually know what software and services are on them (the one i'm trying to send to was a 6800 - and my phone is a T300)

see your problem there... what model of nokia is that? if not mistaken, 6 series cannot use ir to send/receive files phone to phone unless the phone sending the file is either 3650 fo 7650.
other then that i dun think nokia phones are capable of
