My wife and I were thinking about switching carriers when our contract with U.S. Cellular expired. My wife called them and asked when the contract ended. After that, we contacted Cingular, and were going to get the new service started, before our current contract with USC expired. We had not idea that porting out our number would also terminate our contract with USC. A few weeks later, we got a bill from USC for $300, for early termination. We were never told that we would be charged $300 for porting out our number. USC charged us, when there was less than a month left on the contract. The claimed that they're records indicate that Tessa was told this, but that is an all lie, had we known that they would charge us $300, we would have never gone through with changing carries, until after the contract had expired. I will never recommend USC to anyone. They overcharge, and don't have Customer Care, as they claim! DO NOT USE THEM!!!!

Just so you know, all carriers operate the same way. If you cancel your contract with any company before the ending date, you are charged a termination fee, it's not a fee for porting your number.

    Porting out!

Did you really think that porting your number out to some other carrier wouldn't break your contract I mean really just common sense would tell you that ! DUH Ever carrier works that way not just us cellular they are a profit company how are they suposed to make money if their customers don't fulfill their contracts.

    Unfair Fee!

I am equally aggravated, and so I call myself "Bitten." I just received my last T-Mobile bill, and they have charged me $200 for porting the number to my new carrier a week before my last contract expired. Note, guys, I made a courtsy call to the T-Mobile Customer Service two weeks before the contract expired, and told them that I will not be renewing my contract. I also told this lady that I am going to transfer my number. She never told me that porting the number is considered a "breach of contract;" I just spoke to their customer service again, arguing without any success that they had the responsibility to let me know that I could not transfer my number until after the contract expired.
Can someone suggest a useful recourse? I have immeccable credit, and I don't want to damage it, because someone forgot to do her duty.

US Cellular as a company tends to pride itself on being ethical. If a number is going to be ported out it leaves the company its being ported out from...how can anybody be upset at the fact that if you sign a contract and its not fully completed there shouldn't be any break fees? You sign a lease with a land lord for 6 months you can't say to the land lord that "Hey i've been here 4 1/2 months I've paid you enough I'm going to leave" it just doesn't work.

Some carriers do charge a fee for porting as well as ETF. Nothing prohibits them from doing so.

Also ETFs are not the same with all carriers.

Some carriers only require the return of the rebate amount you received when agreeing to a contract (i.e. --you sign up for 2 years and on that basis the carrier gives you $150 off the retail price of the phone. When you leave prior to 2 years, you must pay $150 since you are no longer entitled to it.) Basically it's a wash.

Other carriers charge you substantially more for ETF than what they gave you as rebate for signing on for 2 year contract.

In addition, some resellers and dealers are starting to charge their own ETF , that is IN ADDITION to that charged by the carrier. Users not paying attention to the fine print can find themselves forking over $600 per line in ETF.

    Caveat Emptor.
