im just curious when did GSM start in the US, because way back in 1999 my family stayed in the US for two months on vacation, and we looked around and we went into a store and asked if they had any cellphones which uses Sim cards, and nobody had no clue what a sim card was. Thanx

According to a few websites that have a history of GSM, it looks like the US had GSM starting in 1998. And more likely than not, most of those were business users. So it's not that much of a shock to hear that some places that were selling cells phones, would not have heard of SIM cards, since very few people would have had phones with them in 1999, or at least the one you visited anyway.
But I was using a GSM phone from at least as early as 1999/2000 with AT&T wireless, as I only just recently (Jan 06) switched over to Cingular and their GSM phones.
