    Hi, everyone

I'm writing a story in which a cell phone mysteriously rings in a no service area.

Is this possible? If so, can you offer any explanation why this would happen?

Would there be a tone or a message or something indicating "no service" other than on the phone screen?

My story is a suspense novel with paranormal elements. The protagonist is lost on a country road during a rain storm and she hasn't been able to call for help because she isn't near a service tower. She's tried to use the phone but been frustrated by the "No Svc", indicated on her phone's lighted screen.

Then, out of nowhere, her phone begins to ring. She picks it up and sees "No Svc" on the screen, though it's still ringing. She says "hello" but no one's there. She's also near an old haunted cemetery and this only adds to her anxiety.

I'm trying to keep it authentic as possible, so I thought I'd better check my facts. Can anyone here offer any answers?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Can a cell ring in No Svc area?

We live in a place where cell phone service is iffy. We have had REALLY strange things happen with our cell phones. One time i sent a message from someones phone to my phone , we were in the same room, three days later at about 3 a.m. I get the message.

Another time I went down my address list hit the call button when I reached my sister in-laws phone and looked at the screen on the phone and saw that it was calling her. Needless to say I did not call her I was connected to someone else. I thought that there was a big joke being played on me, but no there was no joke the cell phone got twisted.

People call me and I have FULL reception and I do not get the calls. They say it goes straight to voice mail.

Also there have been times when my phone rings and it says a name that I know, and when I answer there is no one there and when I call the person back they say they did not call. I ask if they were butt dailing, and no they were not. Also the phone rings and it says error in connection. The phone rings and it says no information. Weird stuff.

I heard of these guys who were fishing in a no reception area and when one of the guys got taken away by a wave they called 911 and there was reception for that. Cell phones do weird things all the time, so I have no doubt that cell phone can ring in a no reception area, it is just weird when it does.

    Hope this helps some what.
