    Recently, as I was researching some information on switching service providers, I was told that no matter what company you switch to, your number can legally go with you, because you own the number.

    I was quite clear that this was the case with contracted phones, but I'm not sure about pre-pay.

    You don't really 'own' the number - the number is property of the phone company - when you transfer a number it's ownership is just being moved from one company to another.
